My wife and I are getting ready to have a house built as well as a detached garage/shop for me. It will be used for some mild woodworking/mechanic work. Also, there will be one car, a dirtbike, lawnmower, and some other items stored inside it. The shop will be stick framed and I was thinking 24'x32'. I know everyone says build bigger than what you think you need, but budget does play a part too. I'm looking for any tips I can get as far as the construction goes. My builder wants basic dimensions, roof pitch, and rudimentary drawing. What are some things I need to consider? Thanks for all the help.

Natural gas for heat / water / floor drain / outside electrical outlet/s / full insulation /

I put a separate addition on the side of my 26'x30' detached, it allowed me to store lawn mower, Tractor and other items so I could keep the main garage area neat and uncluttered. See my shop here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140674&highlight=26'+30'+Garage+photos+videos

I do not have access to natural gas. We will have propane, and I had considered a propane heater. I was also thinking about possibly using a wood stove. A lean to for the lawn mower and some other things is a good idea.

Since you're in the planning stage, consider a buildout from one of the walls for a compressor and dust collector. Both are bulky, loud necessities that don't need to be within arms reach. 200amp service and 220v would be on the want list too.

24 x 32 is barely a 2-car garage. I foresee you moving stuff around a lot to do much work.

So, what is the budget for this building? Can you do any of the finish work and put more money into the structure?
Also, since we don't know where you are located, a building in Anchorage will be a bit different than one in Miami....

Before going with a wood stove consult your insurance company, some frown on a wood stove and could deny coverage (?)

Or a separate small building. Our new to us home has a 10' x 10' metal shed and I figured I'd tear it down once my barn was built.

That little shed is so handy, other than banging my head on the door frame :headscrat..... I've got all my yard tools and all my lumber stored in it. It's only about 30 ft from my barn, so access to it is easy.

A lot of these type sheds you can buy for less than most of us could buy the materials for.

Id consider 30x40, you can always add interior things down the road as more funds become available. But the basic square footage is megabucks to increase later on.

I'm not planning on a lift, so what do you guys recommend for ceiling height?

Above a 10' wall you can get into having to center-block the studs inside the walls. 10' is a decent height imo, if an auto lift is not intended to be installed.

No matter what the size, its worth also having attic-storage trusses quoted as an option. In my case it ended up to be very inexpensive square footage, something to consider if you have to keep the footprint down. Its definitely going to get hotter and colder than the inside but its dry-storage.

I would go for at least 9' finished interior height. This allows you to handle 8' lumber without worrying about hitting lights.

Have the floor poured thick enough to handle a lift. You never know...

A ceiling at 9' foot needs 8' studs and a 1' curb or cutting down a bunch of 10' sticks.....
Using 10' studs saves some money.

What's your budget?

I really don't know what to expect as far as price goes. My builder is doing the house at a set price as long as we stick to the price sheet on the finishes, but he is gonna do the garage cost plus. Cost plus makes me a little nervous, especially with my ignorance. I'd like to be ~30k or less even if that means not completely finishing the inside.
