This is a pretty rookie question but I am just trying to educate myself a bit. I am going to start building a shop in the next bit and am trying to figure out my best option for a meter box. I will attach a picture. I want everything underground from the road because I am putting in a cabin in the woods and prefer not to cut down many trees getting power in. My plan is to run power beside the driveway underground. So since I am building the shop first and it will require power before construction of the house, what is my best option for power? Does the meter go by the road or the shop? Then can I run from the shop to the house? The shop is around 150' off the road and 75' from the house. I think I need a temporary meter by the shop but I have seen where people make long runs from the meter on a pole at the road to their shop/house? Feel free to educate me :shocking:

I put a split 400 (320) meter on my shop. Fed from the road then the house is few from the shop.

My layout is absolutely identical to yours. House is about 100' from the shop. When I trenched to the house I had them trench 4' deep and I layed water pipe/co-ax/gas line and a few other lines in there. Fed water/internet/TV to the shop from the house.

Talk to your power company about location and a 320 A meter base. More than likely you won't want two meters as each meter usually comes with a separate meter charge. A 320 amp meter base has two sets of lugs so you can run one set of wires to the house and another to the shop while only having one meter to deal with.
