New shop HVAC

I'm building a new 32 x 40 shop and need to make a decision on HVAC. I was thinking of a split unit with just one big duct blowing inside the shop. Is that an OK idea or is there a better option? Money is always an option but I don't want to do this twice either.

with that size shop I would have one main return at the unit and a main trunk ( supply line ) run across the shop with several vents cut into it that would circulate air better through the shop than just having it blow out at the unit . A smaller shop would be ok with that but 32 X 40 is getting big enough to bother with running a trunk line.

I agree with Rick. My garage is 30x40 with seven vents. Four in the main garage area, and one each in the bath, kitchen and loading room.

Spreading the heat evenly with a trunk duct system like rickair said is the way to go. The extra cost now will pay off with a balanced temp throughout your shop. If you have it designed the trunk size will decrease as outlets come off, maintaining even pressure in the system. Try to mount the t'stat in a central location, on an inside wall and not where it will be effected by other heat sources,( machines, direct sunlight,etc.).

I have a 30x60 shop that I put hvac in. I did it in stages.At first just the unit and a duct to open space and then with a full ducting system.The ducting system works way better and is alot quieter.The biggest difference for me is the 4 ceiling fans that run on low 24/7. I have 11 foot ceilings so I put in 4 remote controlled 52" ceiling fans.I didnt know how much of a difference they made until the power went out one night. I went out the next day (winter) and it was cold from my waist down.I noticed the fans were off and turned them on .It took no time and the room felt much warmer everywhere.

Interesting. I didn't think about fans but that's a good idea.
