New Shop Lighting Q?

Hi, I am new here and so far really enjoying the site.

I am planning for a shop attached to the house. It will be approximately 1400sf with a ceiling of 16' (to accommodate a bridge crane).

Primary use of the space: Machine Shop.

Where do I start when planning for adequate lighting?

Is there a formula to calculate for height, square footage, wattage, type, etc?

Someone on this site recommended downloading visual basic for free and inputing all your factors. I did this and it worked well. FYI I ended up with 17 8' light fixtures running 4 32 watt 5000k bulbs and it is plenty bright for my 1800 sf shop. I only have 9' ceilings and I'm more woodwork/metalwork than machine shop.
