New Shop nearly finished

Hey all, I just joined here recently so if I can figure out how to post pictures, I'd like to show my new shop. It's 40' wide and 64' long with 10' sidewalls. There is a loft that is 16'wide and 64' long and a side shed that is 14' X 64'.

There will be an 8' wide mezzanine along the north wall to store motorcycles and a dwarf car. Under the mezzanine will be a couple of lathes, a mill a cnc mill and some other machine shop type stuff. Along the west wall will be the sheet metal fabrication area with a couple of work tables, an English wheel, planishing hammer, Helve hammer, a shear and a couple of brakes. Along the east wall will be a welding area , an assembly area and a wood working area separated by a wall created by a row of cabinets. The center aisle will be kept clear of stationary tools to have room for big projects. I'm restoring an antique bus and converting it into a motor home.

Anyway, I finished up the insulation tonight and I'm starting to see the end of the tunnel with this project. This barn will be my hangout when I retire from full time work in about 58 months, give or take.

Tight under the "Quick Reply" box you see two tabs. One is "Post Quick Reply" and the other is "Go Advanced". Click on the "Go Advanced"

Then after the new window pops up, scroll down a scosche and you will see a box that says "Attach Files" and a button that says "Manage Attachments" Click on the button that says "Manage Attachments"

Another window will pop up and in that window you will see buttons that say "Choose" Click on the "Choose" button

When the next window pops up, search for where you have your pictures stored. Double click on the picture you want to upload. You can upload up to 7 pictures.

After you have "Choosed" 1 to 7 times, then click on the button that says "Upload"

Then after they are uploaded, you can close that window, come back to the reply box, state your case to the rest of the members, then hit "Submit Reply"

Once you do it a couple of times you will be a picture posting fool. You'll be snapping pics of anything and everything just to share with us. WE LIKE PICTURES!!!!!!!

Here's maybe, some pictures of my project.

The first picture shows one of the many truck loads of #7 structural fill. Total fill was about 218 tons.

The next is a picture of the forms and perimiter insulation in place.

Next is Israel y los manitos who placed 58 yards of concrete.

Next is the pile of used steel I found for .35 a pound.

Next is the rig I used to put up the steel, a '68 Ford camper special with a Big Joe lift in the bed with a Harbor Freight pickup bed hoist attached to the forks. The Big Joe would only go 8' high. I needed about 6 more feet of lift.

The next is a picture of the upper floor joists going into place.

Here are a couple more. In the first picture my daughter is holding a chain that is about the same weight as the piece of siding. This rig worked out really well. Sorry about the crappy pictures. Not sure what happened there.

It was a bit weird, from the road a couple of blocks away it looked like someone was building a double wide trailer house 14 feet off the ground. Cars would stop and people would stare.

Hey guys, I could use some help choosing a color for the inside of this barn/shop. The sheet rock is done, it's primed and ready to paint. The ceiling will be semi gloss bright white for maximum light reflection. The walls, I'm thinking will be the same white extending down about 5' from the ceiling. Below that is where I'm stuck. I went to the paint store and came home with about a hundred various paint chips, still can't decide. Is there somewhere in this site or anywhere else that I can see what others have done?

what's your usage for the second floor?
any opening to hoist things up from inside or does everything need to go up the outside steps?
since it looks like you are going to be doing metalworking, 3' or so high metal all around the walls would be durable and easy to keep neat.......maybe a grey/galvanized color, just me being around metalworking machines, I like machine grey

Hey Kiwi, I would trade this building for your stash.

There is a 6x8 beam that extends out the south side over a door that is 4' wide by 6' tall. At the end of the beam there is an iron strap with a hook to hang a hoist. I plan to store motorcycles up there. At the north end of the loft will be a PMS room for my wife when she needs some space. She can hang out up there and bang on her guitar.

I've considered gray but I think I'd like some color, not a neutral, I don't know.

I finally got my final inspection signed off this morning. Wife is planning a party sometime around Labor Day weekend. By then I should have the mezzanine built and loaded, the outside trim finished and painted and the lift erected. Hope to have some machinery moved in as well. This project has taken 2 years and 3 days to complete. It cost me a few $, a wrecked left shoulder and right hand. I have something to show for it though I suppose. The last barn I built was only 30' X 40"with 8' side walls. It only took 6 months to complete. That was 15 years ago. I'll be 62 in a couple of months. If I had waited much longer to start this project I would have needed help. This is the last one for me. Next project is to finish my bus.

where did you get the lift ? what make is it

Robert, the lift is a combination of a Big Joe 2500 lb pallet stacker with a Harbor Freight pick up bed lift bolted to an adapter that slides onto the forks. It turned out to be a pretty handy crane.

bobadame thank you I have stacking pallet Racks in my garage with feed on them and it is hard to use my frontend loader to set up and that lift might be the ticket verses a forklift
