need some advice here fellers. we are getting ready to have a new shop built. 30x40x10. i am in the process of getting quotes made up. one of the issues (actually its a blessing) i have is my father in law is offering me 15 free 30 foot trusses with 2 foot overhang, never used, always stored inside. whats the best way for me to get this new shop quoted up while including these trusses? i am probably overthinking this, but it really is driving me nuts. is it really just as simple as calling up a pole shed builder and asking? my current quotes are from one stop shop folks like morton and cleary. thoughts anybody? thanks

Call up a local lumber yard and find out the market price. Assume a contractor will get a ~10-20% discount, then start negotiating. Assuming you are dealing with smaller local contractors, everything is negotiable.

Don't be surprised if your contractor doesn't want to use them due to implied liability / warranty issues.

Are the trusses stickered with a manufacturer's tag? You will need someway to prove the provenance of the trusses and to know the load specs they where built too.

I'm going to guess that you might not actually want the trusses. Usually in a pole type building heavier trusses are used with 8-10' spacing and perlins between them to hold the roof sheathing or steel.

The trusses you likely have access to are standard residential trusses which are designed to be installed on 2' centers. You can still use them in a shop setting but you will need a true wall instead of a post frame wall for them to sit on and transfer load and you will only have enough for 28' of length so you would need to find 6 identical (which is harder than it should be as all manufacturers are a bit different) trusses to get the rest of the length of your building.

thanks guys for the sturdy advice. i never would have thought of the warranty issues these free trusses would impose. nor did i think of them being residential trusses as opposed to barn trusses. i haven't actually seen them though. in law did say they were to be used on a garage but for some reason re designed what he wanted after material delivery and said he would keep them for future use and now he is relocating and won't need them. they are 2 x 4 cords is all i really know about specs. not sure if they are code stamped or not. so the more i think about it the more i am leaning away from these mostly from a warranty standpoint.
