This is my new shop radio. You may ask why someone would want a car radio in his garage. In these parts of the country radio signals **** for home stereo pickup. Plus car speakers seem to carry better ( at least from my experience). Plus I have a ton of old car stereo parts laying around and they are easy and cheap to find. It is made of fiberglass and wood but could easily be all fiberglass.

This is 2- 6X9's 2- 6" speakers 1- 6" sub and two tweeters. none speaker components are: one car stereo, one computer power supply, one cigarrette lighter, car antennae, and a small amount of wire.

the best thing about this project is it could be a cheap leftover burner, or a money consuming bad-azz.

this one is covered in collage style clippings but could be painted, carpeted, or covered in whatever is leftover from last weeks party

Interesting. How much would some sort of converter cost so you could power a car stereo off of 110??
I have the same problem with reception in my shop radio. I get excellent reception as long as I'm holding onto the antenna. Otherwise nuttin.

Most people use an old computer power supply. IIRC, the yellow wire supplies 12VDC. Be sure to check the amp rating on the PS.

Their are also regulated power supplies by companies like Aston and Pyramid that can be used with no noise in the stereo. Just my $.02:)
Thanks D.J.

I use computer converters myself. i've used the intended power supplies but when you turn the radio up they tend to drain power and the cheaper ones will "bog" (like the lcd will flash) but i always tried the cheaper ones. I,ve hooked a radio and a small amp to these and never had a problem.

the trick on power supplies is to find the green wire and tap it into the ground next to it. then use the yellow wire and black off of the harness. ( there is usually two thick sets and a then set. use one of the thick sets.

i'm checking the thrift stores around here and will do a write up as soon as i find one

I used to do some audio install work in a friends shop. We an alpine cd deck and eq, an old rockford fosgate 150 tube style amp, 2 wall mounted 6x9's ,2 2 way 6 inch mids and 2 fosgate 10 inch subs in a ported enclosure under the bench. All was run off a 12 volt converter. Man the memories! It was crazy the quality sound and volume it could put out.

it carries sound really good. there's alot of airspace in my garage and this thing keeps up pretty good.

my next one should be even better. so far I have a blaupunkt head unit, 6 inch sub, and a large amount of 51/2" bose speaker amp/combos.

That's pretty cool. I used two computer power supplies to power my 12v car amps for my subs in the shop also. I have regular receivers though, just have the car amps powering some old car subs I had laying around.

Wow, what a great idea. Now I have a use for some of the "junk" I have laying around. I also just realized that an old computer case could be used to mount the stereo system and would also look pretty cool. Might be a good project to do with the kids. Now I'm wishing I hadn't thrown away those old computer cases I did about a month ago.

you could use a computer tower (it's been done quite a bit)

but with a little imagination it could go into almost anything

5 gallon oil jug

cool looking old tool box (could even use the tray for using cd's)

old hood scoop

the possibilities are endless

you can even do what i did and use a dead speaker box and about $15 fiberglass

not knocking the idea but if you stare around at your extra stuff you will go ooh! ooh! lol

Yep that's what I used for the power supplies, Used two power supplies in one computer case. Then I mounted the amp and crossover in another old computer case.

Interesting box you have there! Kind of hard to tell the shape due to the stickers, but I like your creativity.

I'm also using a car jam for the garage. I'm a fan of all things Alpine, especially old school. So, this $5 flea market find from 1986 works well. It's running some old 4-way 6X9's and extra tweeters in boxes in the rafters. I'm powering if off of a wall wart I found that provided 12v at 1A. That's enough for this older radio that isn't super powerful. Plenty loud for the garage though!

My Garage Stereo is also a Car unit...A Jensen Head unit Mounted in a 1957 Chevy dashboard (need to finish)

It powers Four 6X9 Jensen speakers that Are in boxes (fit inbetween cieling Joists with a PVC elbow for a Port) they are mounted in my ceiling with Stainless Steel "Old School" round Grills.

The 1957 Dash in my Basement by my pool table, is all restored and painted...Had to build a metal box to mount the head unit in the Dash. Still need to paint and finish the ends on the garage unit. (i Picked up 3 dashes years ago)

Sorry if the pics are dark...Hopefully you can see everything!
