Hey Im buying a new shop vacuum and I have a few ideas Im considering and want yalls opinions. Im planning on buying the hoover guv prograde from walmart because it seems to offer the best price. This one is wall mounted and has a 30 ft hose. It has great ratings so I feel like its the best option that is in my price range. But I have an idea for it that isnt a deal breaker but I just thought it would be cool. As everyone on this forum knows space is of utmost importance in our garage so I was thinking that id hide this vacuum in an ackward spot in my garage and replace the rocker on/off switch that comes on the vacuum with something that can be controlled remotely with a key fob or something. I know this is a kind of random idea but i was just wondering if this is even possible. Thanks!!

I run across remote electrical gadgets all the time at garage sales. I used one that would turn on a light to chase deer/raccoons away.

Just use a remote switch that is normally sold for Xmas lights. The module plugs into a receptacle and the vac plugs into the module. A fob controls everything. I have a 3 channel unit that turns on three differant neon signs in my shop. I would think the amp draw on the vac should be in range of a quality remote switch.

I'd zip-tie the remote near the end of the hose.

I'd also look at mounting the motor high on the wall and zip-tying the first 10 feet or so of hose to a boom so it can reach over cars to the far side. Dragging around the hose on my shop vac is enough of a pain now that I use the house vacuum for the far side of the cars. For that matter, I want to have an electrical extension cord and an air hose on the same boom. Hell maybe a garden hose while I'm at it... a giant electrified version of that air/water/suction tool they use at the dentist :)

They turn on and off when you plug in or unplug the vacuum hose as long as the unit is turned on at the power.

Yes, but the power doesn't run through the hose connection. A doorbell transformer supplies 24V to a microswitch at the hose connection. That triggers a contactor at the motor. The contactor is usually the same as the ones that power furnace blowers off a thermostat. The net effect is similar to the suggestions above, but provides a switch that won't burn out after the third use.

The hose connection acts as a switch to complete the circuit when you connect it. Push the hose into the connection to turn on and remove to turn off. It would be easy to make that connection work in another way with a wire on the hose and a switch.

If you go the wireless adapter route, just make sure you get one that defaults to off after a power cycle. I bought one (cheap exterior model for lights) to run some additional LED shop lights off the door opener outlet. Works great but if the house power cycles, the LED lights come on. Not an issue with the shop lights, but would be super annoying with a vacuum.

Use a zwave switch and control it with your iPhone:)

You will love that vacuum, BTW. I have one hanging in my garage, I bought it new in the box, on craigslist for 65 bucks. I'm not sure how, I didn't ask. But I like it. Remember it's not for wet use

What is a zwave? But that sounds like a great deal. I might try finding one on craigslist and try buying it new and offer him like $80 for it if he would ship it to me.

It's a home automation thing. Look up the wink hub or smart things hub. You connect the outlets or light switch- a lot of options exist- and can control via smartphone, thermostats. It was a smarty pants response as the remote control options posted above would work. Although Zwave control would work too :)

Here is your plan in action. I used a hose reel with 60' of hose to reach my whole shop and driveways. I used one of those remote start kits someone else posted about...taped the key fob to the handle so it is right there to turn on and off...works great.

If you enlarge this photo you can see the white fob on the suction end.

The reel on the right is 250' of 1/2" air hose to reach my whole property for air tools...roofs too.

Up and out of the way...also note that I put a vacuum mufler on it...I am in a heated garage in snow country...so wanted to keep wall penetrations minimal..and heat in...

Amazon has them...by Cox Reels...220 bucks...and they are specifically made for vacuum hose...I bought the hose separately...also on Amazon...whole reel setup was about 400 I think....

I looked at the GUV. I ended up with the original version of the Craftsman Clean and Carry wall mount wet/dry vac because the GUV is dry use only and costs a lot more. I bought an extra hose from Sears parts and I can reach both sides of a car in the driveway without taking the unit of off the wall. I also used a Stanley remote controlled receptacle, but the new version of the Craftsman vac has a remote switch built in to the hose.

+1 i use the same thing for my GUV as well and it works great... This way when i am vacuuming the car and need to do something else i dont have to walk all of the way to the vac to shut it off

I finally went through on my vacuum project and bought the GUV. It comes in wednesday. Does anyone know the diameter of the hose so I can buy some pvc pipe to run a vac outlet to my work bench? Thanks for the help and sorry for taking so long to follow through on this project.

I have the GUV and it's been great. It can be rather loud in the shop but I may try a muffler as mentioned above. It would also be nice if it was a wet/dry vac as well but I can live with that...

Todd beat me to it. I didnt make it over to my old shop this weekend. I hadnt thought of adding a hard line to different parts of the shop...sounds like a good idea if the vac is stout enough to pull debris that far.
