New Shop

I have had 3 shop in the past, but now downsizing with a new shop which is 30'x30' . Ever shop in past, I have sheet rock, but this time I only want sheet rock ceiling and not the walls. What are some options for the walls other than steel sheets..

My Dad worked at Huber (Advantech) for 37 years. Started in 83, shortly after the mill opened.

He did a "holy ****" when I told him 7/16" cheese grade OSB was $53 a sheet here.

Metal roofing? I think that's what I'm going with on the inside, walls and ceiling.

My other 3 shops had sheet rock and just wasn't all that happy with it. This shop just want better wall coving that I can hang stuff from. Not get damaged as easily as the rock and look good in the process. The walls will be insulated with bats and the ceiling will have blown in insulation once rocked. Other than sheet rock, something else will be more expensive, but rock isn't free so I am willing to spend a little more on the walls. Lets say I am closer to 80 than 60 and THIS will be my last shop so I will like it to look better and more useful than sheet rock walls.

Tongue and groove or shiplap maybe, could paint or stain it. Or sheath the inside in a slat wall product. Either would be expensive but would work better than sheetrock for general attachment.

Fire codes may have an impact on the decision.

I did 5/8 ply. One side was relatively smooth like an a/c ply.
Absolutely love it. Not a care if anything falls against it.
But I did it last year before COVID when prices were way cheaper. Might want to try wait this mess out

Reclaimed pallet boards. Free or almost free......hang whatever, wherever.....don't worry about damage.

FRP is tough enough for the Public Restrooms at Gas Stations and Fast Food Places; nothing I do in my shop is as bad as the stuff that goes on in those places.

If, or when plywood prices go down, I'm going with 1/2" painted plywood. My walls are 60 ft x16 ft, and the middle sections are sheer walls that are engineered with 1/2" douglas fir both sides. So I'm just going to continue with it on the rest of the walls.

I did T1-11 oriented vertically. Happy with it after almost 8 years.

Might not be for you if you do anything sparky (welding. grinding, etc), although mine is sealed with a anti-flammable additive.
