I'm building a new shop to go with the wifes new house. I'm thinking a 40x40 with 4 doors in the end. 2- 8x8 doors and a 12x??door for a motorhome and a walkin door. I want a walkin in the side and probably a small overhead door in the end opposite the car doors for lawnmower etc. Also want a bathroom and an small office in the front and an enclosed area (cleanroom) to build engines. I think in one bay i want a lift (not sure what kind yet but probably a 2 post). How tall of side walls do I need to put a lift in and for a motorhome? This shop is primarily for building cars and hotrods and maybe store a motorhome (later), so I want it long enough to work infront and all around the side of the cars. Is 40 ft going to be long enough or should it be longer and/or wider(I can always find more things to take up the room)?
thanks::thumbup:

This tread should be on the discussion page.

Everyone here will tell you to build as big as you can afford. My shop is 30' x 40' and seemed huge wen I built it. But now it is so full I can not work in it.

Go to page 4 of this Garage Gallery and click on the last post on the page, AGBill Garage/Workshop. My garage is very close to what you describe, a 40' by 40' with a planned office, bathroom and utility room.

Some Class A RVs are 12' -6" tall including the AC units on the roof. Door sizes typically come in 2' increments as standard doors, 12', 14', 16' high, etc. In order to clear a potential 12' - 6" RV, I needed a 14' door, which required a 16' high building, because most buildings require 2' above the door opening for structural header room.

For my metal building, the actual RV door opening is 13' - 8" due to the design, but this will still clear any Class A RV.

I would go with 14' doors as already mentioned if you want Rv parking, My TT is 12+ tall and it's @35 feet long overall. So you might want to check Rv lengths. Might want it longer.
A clean room will be what 15x15-20x20?
Office the same?
You need to think about door width also, Rv's take 11-12 foot doors min.

I drew this up, two 9' doors, two 15x15 rooms and one 12 wide door, grid scale is 5'. I pu a full size truck a straight truck(sorry no RV) and a riding lawnmoxer in it for you.
I would get some graph paper or program and actually put down on paper what you need/want. Use cardboard cutouts for vehicles and the like.
