I did a little digging and I want to make sure I am reading this right. To keep the sink on top of the cabinet, just caulk around the edges???:wtf:

That or some sinks come with metal clips you use under them. Generally stainless steel ones I think have clips.

All drop in sinks that I have installed had some type of fastener from underneath the countertop. (I've only installed a few during remodels so I am definately not an expert) It is wise to put silicone or plumbers putty on the underside of the sink edge and then tighten it down. This will seal any splashes from leaking under the sink rim and rotting the countertop prematurely.

As already mentioned, stainless sinks normally come with clips that fold down under the cutout lip (and then tightened)
If you haven't got any, just use some clear silicon. Run a bead under the sink lip then install the sink - you can weight it down with a few bricks etc.
I also then run another bead around the outside of the lip to make sure no moisture will get in and damage the benchtop.
Clean up any excess silicon using a spray bottle with a mix of water/dishwashing detergent. Just spray it around the lip and on your finger and wipe around the lip. As you go, wipe the excess silicon off your finger onto a piece of scrap cardboard or whatever and keep re wetting your finger.
Hope this helps.
