looking for a 1/2 drive metric impact socket set; I'll buy a deep set first. I've narrowed it down to SK, Williams, and Sunex. Plenty of good reviews for Sunex but I'd like to buy USA made if I can justify it. I like williams, and they are cheaper than SK, but SK comes with more sockets.

So, i'd like to hear some opinions on the "newer" SK impact sockets, or Williams- good, bad, whatever, to help in my decision.

Depends on what sizes you are looking for...

I own the SK 4047, can be bought from Toolwarehouse.net for $231 free shipping using coupon code "SCREAMING15".

It's a 10mm-36mm deep set. For the $$, just about $100 more than the Taiwan Sunex set. I spent the extra $100 and went US made. The SK's are also size stamped and laser etched.

I also own the Craftsman 52 pc set, that is up to 27mm with a few skips and 1-1/16" with no skips. Those are also good. The are also cheaper at around $160 on sale. Better value IMO. I wanted the SK's for the larger sockets though, as just the top 4 sizes of SK are $100 alone.

If Craftsman offered the 10-36mm deep set like SK did I would've bought them, they are excellent impact sockets, just didn't come in the sizes I needed. I use a 30mm and 36mm regularly. Craftsman's 12-27mm deep set is on sale now for only $45. I believe the sockets themselves are made in an Armstrong factory.

I have them and seem nice. Been using them about 6 months now.
Here is the thread that got me to get them.

Yeah, these sets are nice cause it has all you axle nut sizes, usually 30-36.
I was able to bring my Axle nut sockets and my 10-19 Mac set home.

thanks for the replies.

Interestingly enough, I am looking at the SK 4047 and Williams MS-14-24RC sets that you both mentioned! I did see that thread Mr Breeze listed as I did a search before I posted.

Pipsters- how are your SK impacts holding up? I read your posts in that thread but wondered if you had any updates. Do they have the sizes imprinted in them along with the laser etching? That is a great price with the code- and that makes the SK basically the same price as williams.

I currently have a few HF sets but they skip sizes so I was wanted to get something "complete", as a just in case.

I have a set of SK deep impact sockets that has to be about 8-10 years old by now and it's still holding up great. Used to belong to my old man. I use them everyday at work, just like he did and I have no complaints. Net set I buy will also be SK

The SK's are good but I don't really have anything to go by except my Craftsman ones. But I beat on my SK's more than I beat on my Craftsman so it's not really a fair comparison, because the SK's are used on the larger nuts like 30mm and 34mm. Lots more torque and pounding on them.

I don't worry at all about breaking them. My only concern long term is wear but if you do some research you'll find the Snap-On/Williams sockets wear a significant amount. Type in "snap on impact socket wear" in google and take a look. For the backyard guy I highly doubt I will even come close to wearing out my SK's.

The SK's are stamped and laser etched. The stamping on the SK's is excellent, it's very deep and easily read. I'm not at home now so I can't take a picture, but will when I get home tonight or tomorrow.

I really like the look of the Williams set on toolsdelivered.com. One thing that really appeals to me about the SK set though is the laser etching and stamping of the sockets. I really don't know how I feel about supporting SK though. There's been enough posts about their warranty and people having problems getting tools warranted that I am worried. If I am paying more than Harbor Freight money, I want a no questions asked replacement warranty and that doesn't appear to be what I'd get with SK. I'm confident based upon my dealings with Snap On directly that I'd have no problem ever warrantying a Williams socket. I'm kind of torn. Does anyone know if the SK impacts have the flank drive-like side gripping action? It appears that the Williams do. The warranty seems to be the real sticking point with me for the SK sockets but is it really even possible to abuse impacts? Thanks for the input.

The Williams/SO Industrial warranty is almost exactly the same wording as the SK wording. The products are warrantied against manufacturers defects and materials. A cracked impact socket would be a defect.

That being said, I have no idea if you tried to wear out an impact if they would warranty it. Sears would. Which is also why I bought the Sears set. Sears is the only no questions asked no receipt required warranty. Plus I want to support Sears buying their (what's left) quality tools. If you're going to be using them 24/7 I would buy something that can easily be replaced or is so cheap that you can just buy another one, IE Sunex 2646 for roughly $150. If not I don't think you can go wrong with any name or off brand set.

The SK and Craftsman impacts have the flank drive like cutouts, like every modern day socket. No idea what sort of material they are made out of, chrome moly has been around for decades however so I suspect that while Sunex advertises its impacts as being made out of chrome moly I would guess that Sears, SK, Proto, etc. are all made out of similar materials.

If I were to do it again I'd buy the Craftsman set just like I did and buy the Harbor Freight axle socket set since I needed a 30mm and 34mm 6 point. I also need a 30mm 12 point and I will just buy that for around $10. No need to really have a 23mm, 25mm, 26mm, 28mm, 29mm since there really aren't any cars that use those size bolts if you are a DIY. The Craftsman set covers virtually all SAE and metric sizes used. It would save some money and reduce the amount of stuff you have crammed in your toolbox.

Why not just buy a Craftsman deep metric set when they're on sale at half off for like $45? That's the best deal going.
If I wasn't bargain shopping, I would opt for Proto impact sockets but, that's just me.
