I have a sliding metal gate that has had a GTO SL-100 opener for the last 11 years. It was a total pain the first few months...then they finally sent a new unit. Worked great until the limit switch functions fried on the mother board. They don’t make parts for it anymore, and it is beyond its life expectancy.

Anybody got suggestions about good sliding gate opener brands...or bad ones to avoid...

I am very interested in finding a good brand that others have used. Budget 1-2k

I only have experience with Elite gate operators. I have 4 that have been in operation for 15 to 19 years. Very reliable. Easy to work on. If one goes out, I'm buying another.
Very important that it's mounted exactly in line with the chain and secured to the concrete pad so it doesn't wiggle.

I'm in the self storage business with multiple facilities. I've had 2 issues with sliding openers in the last 5 years that required a repair or replacement......1 got smashed by a drunk driver and the other was on unit that was over 20yrs old in which a metal part completely wore through. I couldn't even tell you what brand any of mine are off the top of my head. The only consistent maintenance issues are limit switches get wonky and need adjustment. Otherwise, 99% of the problems are related to our software, keypads, or wiring. Get an actual "commercial" unit and you should be fine. Take my opinion for what it is, but I own a lot of sliding gates.

I bought an All-o-Matic SL-90 almost 2 years ago now for my cantilever sliding gate. I believe you commented in a the thread were I was asking some questions. I like it so far. I now use it daily.

I'm sure you know you are now supposed to install those photoeyes similar to garage door openers, right. I called the people at affordableopeners.com and they told me the photoeyes are now required for operation. I was happy with the purchase at this place too. I called to help wire and the guy was really helpful. The only issue I've had is condesnation on the photoeyes. I believe there's another safety system that uses something else for sensing. I may look into that soon.

Also, not sure if yours was DC, but I recommend the DC over AC, since they have battery backup in case of power outage. Of course, the batteries would require replacement at regular intervals. Mine has (2) 12V? batteries.

I hope this helps.

Yeah, the photoeye has a little "hood" on the reflector, but the actual signal sensor does not. It's more like dew on the reflector (warm evening and then temperature drops overnight.)

It's not too common, that it does this, so I just go over and swipe the two with my fingers and that's it.
