New snap on ratchet,peeling chrome

I recently purchased a new Snap on F80 ratchet from a seller on everyone's favorite auction site and it has finish issue.(to clarify I received this item last night in new condition)
The seller has offered to take it back but I am a little disappointed this made it past any type of quality controll.
I very thin layer of chrome is peeling from the surface,it started as a small crack but wiping it with a rag or even finger just brushes the chrome right off.

Unfortunately warrantying it is not really an option as I had recently priced this same model ratchet from my local dealer and I don't want to burn that bridge by asking him to warrant it.
I just got cheap and played tool roulette on the internet.

Im tempted to just try buffing it off but I don't want to leave any sharp edges.

How do you complain about quality control on a second hand tool? You have no way of knowing what has happened to it since leaving the factory.

If you have a good Snap on guy, it should not be a problem. If there is someone in your shop that has been spending big bucks on the Snap on truck, get him to warranty it. The shop foreman at the place I used to work at is one of those guys and said he'd back me up if I had any warranty issues. Never had an issue with replacing broken tools with that Snap on guy. I try to buy something every now and then off him as to not be a waste of time.

As long as the cover plate was sitting flush and grooves in the handle weren't too sharp, I'd be happy.

I meant warranty as in a replacement but I understand what you mean,I am glad the seller has offered a resolution.

*****, I agree. Some of the newer SO sockets I got have mediocre chrome compared to others but it’s truly hit and miss.

The seller is doing the right thing by offering a refund.

Yeah just because the seller claimed it’s new doesn’t mean it is. Sorry that happened, it probably didn’t get the chrome process around the head done right.

I would search again on eBay F80’s are always on sale for about $40-$50 i really doubt this would happen again.

I'm curious how this happens too,I wish there was a way to know if the thin layer that is peeling could have been buffed off without further issue but there would be no way of knowing without trying.

I don't want to link to the original ad as the seller has agreed to take it back for a refund so I would rather not burn him.

I've had some new SO tools at work start doing that. Industrial rep warrantied them no questions asked.

I have had this occur on chromed tools during my whole carreer. So, mac, others. Something just didnt go right during manufacturing. I would have no problem asking your tool guy to warranty it. He gets reimbursed by so. But i would also buy something to help with his time.

If you want premium warranty service and jewelry like tool finish you pay for it by dealing with an authorized SO dealer. The OP most likely purchased on EBay because the 'price was right', & for that you can't expect the same factory support that you get from an authorized retailer. Its a bit of chrome, start using the tool in a work environment and the chrome gets all scratched up anyway. I'd soak it up & get on with life, fad more important things to worry about.

Whether or not you buy off the truck depends primarily on the dealer. If you are dealing with a good guy that doesn't mind helping you out every now and then with used stuff, this is the kind of dealer you do business with. Tool trucks are all about customer service. Those tool truck guys that don't take care of their customers won't be in business for long.

30 or more years ago I bought one of the round head pivoting ratchets off the truck. I had chrome peeling at the cut down the middle of the handle where its divided to set tension on the head. Fast forward about 20-25 years and I was out of the auto body business and my brother had a Midas franchise so I left it with him to catch the route guy. Mechanism in the head broke so I gave it to my brother to see if the truck guy would replace it since the chrome was peeling off. Nope. He fixed the mechanism and said cosmetic doesn’t get a warranty replacement.

That kind of grated at my *** for a while and one day I dropped an email to SO customer service. They said of course it is covered and the route driver was wrong. Please send it in for a complete replacement. Of course new model has the plastic/rubber grip handle. But I like it.

Chrome peeling is not cosmetic, it is a definite warranty issue. You can get chrome slivers in your hand or a chrome sliver falling into an engine.

There are plenty of sellers on ebay now, that sell brand new, in package merchandise, directly from the manufacturer or distributor.
Grainger even sells stuff on Ebay.
Even in the past, there where stores who sold Mew merchandise, either because the merchandise wasn’t selling at an actual store location, or maybe just because the merchandise was obscure, and a wider market was needed to efficiently be a retailer for the product.

Well it is now on its way back to the seller,I ended up buying a used one(also from ebay)instead.
I am going to keep an eye on the sellers listings to see if he relists it without mention of the chrome peeling.
