It may look like a FH747 roto ratchet but, what's different about this new ratchet is that it has 100 teeth. Snap on also has an ad in the August issue of PTEN magazine talking about it. I guess this is Snap on's response to the new 88 tooth ratchets coming out this month from Matco. Let the ratchet wars continue.

I'd say about time. Seems like everybody else has fine tooth versions

Hopefully they make a replacement head kit for a TM738.

I'm thinking that these round heads were already ready fine tooth, with a tooth count of 49 for the swivel head and 72 for the regular round heads; it was just time to redesign these. I'm pretty sure these designs have been around for quite awhile.... can anyone confirm the tooth count on their old round heads? The counts I looked up were for the 3/8" drive models.

Round heads don't excite me much but its cool to see new stuff coming out. I am excited that the new 88 tooth guts for the new MATCO ratchets will fit in the old 60 tooth ratchet body's.

So what's the difference between a 80, 88, 100 toothed ratchet? Negligible, short of bragging rights and user's ego?

A couple of degrees in movement before engaging another tooth, which in a confined area might be a good thing. 60 teeth gets a new tooth every 6 degrees, 72 teeth 5 degrees, and 88 teeth gets one 4 degrees. I'm happy with anything over 45 teeth depending on head thickness. I don't care for 30 or 36 tooth ratchets regardless of whose name is on the ratchet.

Where did you get the 100 tooth info? PTEN?

There's no info on the snap on site about it.

Also, the low profile RAF80 is not pictured on their dual 80 page.

I think the Snap-on ones were 39- and 60-tooth. I have a couple of each, they're really nice smooth ratchets, for me i've never needed more, since two of mine are 1/4" stubby ratchets. (well, one has a 3/8" head)

Here here, This man should be listened to!

How could Snap-On just completely ignore the opinion here and the very, very strong prices on ebay? Maybe they tossed the tooling and retooling is out of the question...

Hey Monte-
I checked the Triangle tools site. Where did you see 144 teeth? Did you calculate that?

Never heard of Triangle tools before. They have some interesting designs.

by the way Proto has had a "90 tooth" ratchet for a long time, as discussed here

Apparently has 45 teeth, but 2 pawls. Not exactly sure how it works.

"The ratchets are 45 toothed. What makes them equivalent to having 90 teeth, is that there are two SETS of pawls inside. Each pawl set has 2 pawls. These pawls are timed, so that when one pawl is halfway through it's stroke, the other is engaged. The two pawls are never engaged at the same time. One pawl splits the other's stroke to the next tooth. This is how double pawl round heads achieve the 4 degree swing arc."

And that's how the '144-tooth' works, too. :)

I would much rather have a double pawl 40 something tooth ratchet than a 100 tooth ratchet. They will be more durable and stronger.

More teeth= Smaller teeth= Less material per tooth= less wear and tear it can handle.

And in the case of round heads, the teeth are part of the handle itself, so it's not even serviceable...short of a full replacement.

And I also think that the more teeth there is, the more drag/resistance there is.

superautobacs - is that your nano ratchet? Or did you find it online?
How smooth is it?

'Borrowed' it from the internet. Monte has discussed this in that other thread, as well.
The user says there's more drag than a Facom round head and SO dual 80.

Not necessarily. It depends on how many teeth are engaged at one time. Four small teeth sharing the load can be significantly stronger than one large tooth.
