*new* sparta ratchet info

I posted in the old sparta tool info thread about my sparta ch-45 3/4" drive ratchet with the broken selector dial. I got no responses so I figured I would start a new thread with the updated info I found.

I searched the internet for sparta tools and found very little info. First I found a one line reference to the effect that napa owned the trademark to sparta tools. So with some more digging I found out that sparta was a house brand tool made for napa by new britain tool company back when napa was selling new britain as their top line tools and sparta as their economy line. I found out that some napa stores will still warranty new britain and sparta tools. Unfortunately my napa had no info on the old part numbers so I thought I was out of luck.

The good news is that I found out that new britain was bought out by stanley in the 1970's I believe? So I was digging on ebay and found a re-build kit for a 3/4" drive proto challenger ratchet that looked identical to my sparta. I decided to take a chance and order it. Well it came in today and it is absolutely identical in every way per my mic's and calipers. I put it in and it bact to good as new! So hopefully someone else has an old sparta ratchet laying around needing a kit and can use this info.

Below are the pictures of my ratchet from the other thread with the broken selector just for reference. Also the part number from proto for the 3/4" kit is 1861crk.

I've got a Sparta 1/2" breaker bar that I got from NAPA about 30 years ago. BTW its a decent bar and seems to be better made than a newer Crapsman I have. YMMV.

God that is awesome, I want to get my hands on a nice breaker bar if I can from sparta or a good 1/2" ratchet. That is why I own a good pair of external and internal split ring pliers to fix or recondition ratchets.

I recently got gifted a Sparta CH-45 that's seized up. I was just wondering how you opened it up to rebuild it?

There is a ring that runs inside a lip, you will have to run a screwdriver around until you catch the end of the ring. If you need more help shoot me a PM and I can send some pictures. It's a lot easier to find on a 3/4 ratchet than on a 1/4, I can tell you that from experience. Its probably seized up because it is full of grime and dirt. It is really hard to kill a New Britain sourced ratchet.

Yes, if you look at the square drive side there is a ring wrapped twice around in a groove holding the guts in. I will try to get a picture later today.

I take it you have to find sparta ratchets never heard of them. I would like to try one out are they pricey and are they available.

they can usually be had for around ten dollars or so here on the classifieds,pretty common design made by New Britain,also same as older Husky,proto challenger,I think there was some sold/badged as Giller, they have had a bunch of names put on them over the years, same general design,possible handle differences.
try a search for NB 45 or NB 43

I have just found a CB45 I think that was the number with a flex head for $20.00 but have no idea if that is a good price.

yeah theres some in the classifieds now branded penncraft I think. For a flexy thats not a bad price if it's in good shape.they usually bring more $ than a standard ratchet as theres not as many of them out there and are a bit more unusual(ie: not found at every good garage sale)

Ripped it open, cleaned it out with degreaser/brake cleaner, put it back together, good as new! Thanks guys!

This past Sunday I picked up a 8 inch Sparta adjustable wrench. I have a 6 inch one at work that I have had about 10 years and it has yet to fail me. I had a 3/8 Sparta ratchet, and I did wear that out.
