New split beam torque wrench calibration

I just picked up a new 1/2" precision instrument split beam torque wrench. I had it shipped to my home. Upon receiving the box looked fine, but once opened, the blow molded case is pressed in pretty good on one of the corners.

Is this something I should be concerned with regarding the calibration of the wrench? Or am I just over reacting as it is a new tool?

Just curious to hear others opinions.

Nice thing about a beam TR is zero is always zero. Now if it was whacked half way up the bar section then get grump. Other than that. Carry on.

the blow molded case is pressed in pretty good on one of the corners.

Did the "damage" get into the inside wall of the case, or is just on the outside of the case?

Did the shipping container show any signs of damage that would have caused the case damage?

Those wrenches are pretty tough, being shocked, bashed about, etc, won't hurt them.

Note to Fueler, this is not a typical bending beam type torque wrench. This is a split beam design invented by Precision Instruments, and utilizes a "split beam" inside a rectangular cross section tube housing.

Graf,
I had two of those wrenches from Snap On and hated them. They would "stick" and sometimes not "click" when reaching torque :( I am used to most of the bolts we are torqueing so I would know right away when it wasn't working.

I sent the 3/8" drive one back to Snap On twice for calibration. The second time UPS lost it in transit and that was the best thing that happened in my opinion. I told my Snap On guy to just replace it with the "regular" micrometer type. I still have the 1/2" drive one but rarely use it.

I guess my point is to be careful when using it and if it seems like you are tight enough and it hasn't clicked then you need to stop. I would back mine way down and then it would click. Once it did that it seemed to work ok. I just could not trust it any more :)

I check my torque wrenches against an old school beam torque wrench using a straight adapter. I wouldn't really worry about the PI, they're extremely durable and among my favorites. Miles ahead of any micrometer wrench.

PI invented the split beam, and made them for Snap On for quite a while. Somewhere in there, after SO bought CDI, they used, for a while at least, a split beam that was made by CDI. I think SO went back to the PI version.

I have both 3/8 and 1/2 drive models and never have had a problem. We have some 1/2 drive ones at work and they get used alot and have never had a problem (airline maintenance facility).

As long as there's no physical damage its probably okay but you should test it with another torque wrench...um if you don't have one just go out and buy a beam torque wrench from sears or an auto parts store for 20-30 bucks, always good to have.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The damage did not go through the case, and the original shipping box was not damaged. Looks like they shipped it with the case the way it is.

Funny thing you mention the SO clicker BillK. I have a 3/8" one and it does the same thing. Feels like it sticks. POS sits in my box now and is like new. Always returned to 0 and never dropped.

Looks like I will be just moving on and enjoying the new wrench.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

Graffix, thank you for your support of our product. PM me your address and I'll send you a new box if you'd like. UPS can be hard on the shipping, and depending on where it came from it may have passed through a warehouse or two. I know what it's like, you get a nice product and you want it in a nice case =) Our cases are custom made by Custom-Pak in Iowa. Great company, great product, made in the USA.
