Hey everyone!

I just signed up on this site because of all the useful resources it offers and the much detailed analysis of all the tools and the dos and don'ts.

So a little about me:

I'm currently 23 as of this posting, I've had a long passion for the auto world, I use to race go karts when I was 12. That's when I first started to wrench. My parents are not at all mechanically inclined so I had to learn everything myself. My kart was mostly serviced by myself and I'd sometimes take my kart around the neighbourhood to test new upgrades (got pulled over once and escorted home by the police, parents were not too happy about that). When I turned 16 I got to use the family cars, it was around 17 I got my first complete tool set. It was a 400 pc something mastercraft (Canadian tire - similar to US big box auto stores), you can maybe call it craftsman tools, not sure never really used craftsmans, although i do have one gear wrench from them (gift). From there I started to wrench on the family cars since I was 17. Eventually got a floor jack and jack stands (still have em). But when I turned 19 it was focus on school (university) in legal studies. Found I didn't really enjoy legal studies when I was around 21 and started to work on cars again. This year I started my own shop outside my house (not very legal I know) and I fix mostly BMWs. I received my BMW as a gift for my school success when I was 20. Ever since then I've worked mostly on my car. Did everything myself except for suspension (didn't have the tools and didn't want a spring in my face).

So now I've dropped out of university and applied to be an apprentice, this year. Because of all the networking I did I landed my apprenticeship the first day I applied. I knew a couple of indy garages and just when i decided to take mechanics as a profession (yes I know, there's no glory in it versus law but I enjoy it much more than law, for that I don't mind) one of them was looking for an apprentice. I've been working on customer's BMWs for a good year now and I've learned a lot and that was what convinced me to take up mechanical studies. If you want to know more of what I do you can check me out on e90post canada regional section. (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=916878)

I'm just about to invest in a full rack of snap-on tools, the way I see it all the regularly used stuff I will have high end tools because my set now has served me well but I don't think it will last me into commercial application. Not only that but if I invest in the best tools early on I won't have to worry about tooling when I actually start to run my own legit shop.

I also recently invested in the layout of my garage, I've expanded the ceiling allowing for a lift and raised the garage doors to the ceiling. I still have a lift sitting on my driveway waiting for install because the concrete in the garage had to be repoured due to the thickness (don't want the lift to come off the ground).

Hopefully once everything is sorted out in my garage I'll post a pic of it in the gallery. But for now I just wanted to say hi to everyone and hope to contribute to the community.

Thanks!

Welcome,

If you can get into Mercedes on Yonge and Steeles, that's a nice gig. I believe their shop is Unionized, which isn't common for garages at least in Ontario.
