Got my hands on one of the new 90-tooth ratchets from tekton and I must say, I'm not very happy with the action. The floating pawl puts too much pressure on the gear and causes way too much backdrag. Their 72-tooth design was a lot smoother and less backdrag. Came pre-lubed and still nowhere near as good as their older design.

These are designed and tested to have similar backlash to our 72 tooth ratchets. Your 72 tooth may a bit looser from use. If you believe you have a damaged ratchet, give me a shout.

I don't believe there's a problem with the ratchet itself, haven't had a chance to open it and check out the insides or lube it myself. My 1/4 72 tooth came with no lube and I used WD-40's white lithium. The backdrag is so minimal I can hold the anvil and turn it while the ratchet handle rests at the 6 o'clock position, conversely though the driving strength of the action is strong.
The 90 tooth however I can hold the anvil and turn the whole ratchet 360 degrees without it ratcheting at all. I do like though how the reverse lever is now similar to snap on/craftsman etc.. that left is on and right is off.

What drive size & length did you get? i have 1/4 & 3/8 standard length versions and did what you describe above (provided by anvil, you mean the square drive) and mine ratchets smooth & crisp with no effort. :dunno:

given the length of these ratchets, and their heft, i think the ones i got are really smooth. further exploration is needed to determine what's going on with yours. i wouldn't use white lithium in this style of ratchet though.

Yeah I'm talking about just holding the square and spinning it with your fingers while holding nothing else in the ratchet. My 72 tooth stays in 6 o clock position while the 90 doesn't ratchet and can do a 360.

I've got the mini 72 tooth 1/4 and 3/8 that both have really little backdrag, a standard and long 3/8 with little to medium resistance. Then there's the 90 tooth. It has a lot of resistance and won't ratchet as easily as the 72's.

72's are pretty sweet on drag by the design and way pawl pivots .
the floating single pawl has to drag and lift out of tooth mesh against spring pressure .
For cheap ratchets 72's tend be the gold standard, earlier 90's from taiwan had similar and worse issues .

I'm the opposite. I don't care for the timeless Proto design of the 72 tooth models and prefer the float pawl with lots of teeth.
Perhaps your ratchet will smooth out with use :dunno:
Good luck,

All the teeth and the switch pawl spring is what creates the drag.
Good 72T design can have 5 to 7 teeth meshed contact and with fixed pivot tend wedge harder into mesh and back out easy plus spring load can be less .
These tekton 90's look real nice for price, will have to try one before I commit to an opinion .

Are these prelubed? Really don't want to take apart yet if I don't have to.

As I hold the square drive and turn, the ratchet hangs at 6:00. Really like the fit and finish, and the grip is nice. Will definitely be looking at more of these in the future.

they look superb for spec/pricing .
Light machined oiled from factory so they say.
ideally wants be used hard for month or more then stripped cleaned and greased lightly .
From my experience on floating pawls the selector spring tension has biggest influence on drag, greasing helps a lot but ratchet wants some break in prior to any lubing effort .
Slim head and handle style is superb at this price, if mechanism proves good with light tweaks/lubing they onto a winner if do a full range with flex heads and also consider comfort grips .
So far none of the other lower cost 90T taiwan/china been that great in ratchet movement .

ratchet lube is right up there with brand names and country of origin, some people are very sensitive on the subject  :wtf:

Me, for everything 60 tooth and higher, thin oil. air tool oil, breakfree, 3inone, toolbox buddy, etc. whatever's in reach.

superlube would seem good option to me, i'd do the 1/4 too, I don't like light oil in them as doesn't smooth the mechanism as well as light grease .
With new ratchet best wear them in a bit before lubing .

on 2 of my 1/4dr 72t ratchets using super lube they started to slip. wiped the stuff off and it was fine again. i just use something thinner for them and haven't had a problem since. 3/8dr and bigger no isses with super lube.

My formula is normally light smear of red grease and 3 or 4 drops of atf, work the mechanism by hand and put it to work .
1/4 has been butter smooth no issues from it on various ratchets including taiwan 72 to 100 tooth .

Are these only available at their website?

EDIT: Found on amazon as well.....with prime shipping!

Tekton has free shipping from the website if you have an account and a rewards program. Personally I would only use Amazon if I had a gift card. I understood the appeal of prime when it was $79 and Amazon usually had the lowest price on anything I was looking for. At the present price and with their prices being far less competitive I don't see the value.
