Hi All. Have been researching expanding my existing one-car concrete block garage and thankfully came across this site. I'm in northern NJ, Bergen County. Seeking opinions and first hand accounts of anyone that has actually built a pole barn or similar steel structure in NJ. I have a fresh survey in hand and am ready to go to the building department to see what I can and can't do. Ideally, I'd like to tear down what I have and build a new three-car garage, but as I mentioned, I'm still in the research phase and am weighing non-traditional options vs. typical stick-built structures. Thanks.

Hi LenS and welcome to the forum. It's kind of hard to advise you without more details of what you have already, but why not just take the simple option of adding two more bays using concrete block. One bay could be with a raised roof if you wanted to instal a lift.

I have a single car detached block garage w/ a framed roof w/ asphalt shingles. I received a quote from a contractor last year to add two more bays and reframe the roof - ±$45K! Thought I would research pole barns and steel structures to see if a tear down and new building might be more cost effective.

Just had a survey completed which informed me that I actually have more room around the existing structure than I thought, essentially I have the 3' setback required.
