Hey guys. I'm new to Garage Journal, but I spend quite a bit of time over on OWWM. Seems like there are a few Craftsman drill press experts hanging around here, so I thought I would try to pick your collective brains.

I have a Craftsman 103.0303 that I tore down tonight. I've been absorbing threads here and on OWWM for a couple days before I jumped into it. When I got the spindle out, I gave the chuck a good close look for the first time. It is not the Jacobs with safety collar that I expected. It is a Supreme 6T33C with a ball bearing safety collar. It is mentioned in the old Frank Lee thread, but the pictures are all dead.

Anyone else have this beast, and have you figured out the secret handshake to get it off the spindle?

Pics below.

I've only ever dealt with Jacobs chucks, but I'll give this a shot. Based on this picture, I'm thinking that's a roll pin that marries the chuck to the spindle. And the ball bearings are what's used in the sleeve. Hopefully someone with more wisdom can be of more help.

Edit- Is that a set screw (hex head maybe?) On the upper sleeve? If so maybe that could help with the removal process.

I've backed the set screw out. I think all I have to do now is have the courage to apply force to the collar pushing the chuck off the taper.

And, by "force", I mean unthreading it.

I'm restoring a 65 year old Delta drill press. It has a similar Jacobs chuck.

Youtube videos describe chucking up a sizable Allen wrench to counteract torque, then using a spanner wrench, if you have one, to loosen the collar (mine has a right hand thread) so loosen it like a standard nut. When the collar loosens, keep turning to break the taper loose. If you don't have a spanner wrench, the end of the chuck key handle worked for me.

I was just coming back to this thread to report success and share the exact tip jmarkwolf just posted. Frank Lee sent it to me by PM and I saw the above-mentioned Tubalcain video late last night. Tubalcain did it with the drill press still fully assembled and functional, but it works just as well with the spindle and quill out of the head.

Pic of the chuck still in the vise after success.

Thanks for taking the time to post this Jeff, it's looking great! I look forward to seeing the finished machine. I have a bit of affection for old Craftsman DPs.

Need some help.

Somewhere in one of the threads I read that the piece the safety chuck threads onto is pressed onto the shaft and held in place with a roll pin. Sounds simple enough...until I started to drive the pin out and it doesn't go all the way through. Here's a pic of the pin and the opposite side, where you can see there's no pin or opening for a pin.

I suppose I could take the bearing off the other direction, but that is a long, long way to press.

Any guidance?

Seems they don't want you removing that, so I wouldn't. Are you sure there isn't a seat for the bearing and it will fall down the shaft after you press it the first .5"?

I ran into a similar issue working on an older C-man branded Walker Turner. After exhausting every method to remove that collar that I could think of, I reached out to people smarter than I (not hard to find) and found out that piece was not intended to be removed. I ended up using a bearing splitter and some all thread rod to get the bearing off the long way.

When I reassembled the press it all seems good with one exception. The spindle feeds past the splines in the pulley, then looses all drive and it takes a minute or two to get the splines realigned. I've checked and the pulley is down against the spacer as tight as it can go. If it were any lower, the belt would be rubbing, too. That would seem to mean the spindle needs to go up, but it certainly appears to be correctly placed in the body.

Any thoughts?
