So I live in an apartment, ***** since I am always tinkering around with my Jeep or have some kind of project going on. I decided to claim my attached carport as my garage, it is directly attached to my building so ease of access isn't an issue and it has a storage closet/shed to lock things in......like my compressor ;).

Yesterday was at the habitat ReStore and first thing found a nice vice for $10:

I thought man that's a steal I need to get it!....But I have no work bench to attach it to  Then I saw the sign :pimpflash "50% off all individual cabinets" and the idea came....buy two matching cabinets and a table top to go across and big-bang-boom a workbench!

Yes it's small but it's better then the foldout table I had before.....has some storage and a shiny vice! Can't wait for the next need to clamp something down and use a real vice and not some jerry rigged device that'll prob not work.

oh table top (laminate top) $2 and cabinets $4 each :p

Hey man u gotta do what u gotta do. May not be a nice steel work bench but it gets the job done better then a fold out table. I just made my benches out of 4x4's and 2x6's was cheap and strong. Not $10 cheap but anyway. Good job. Vice is a good find!

My first workbench was a kidney table like this only really old beaten and ugly.

It came from a neighbor who was tossing it....and my Dad put it into the corner of his basement workshop. I had a couple of model planes I worked on, some plastic drawers for tools and parts etc.

Also, I used a folding table in a screen porch at my old cabin.

Makes my shed seem luxurious.

It's all about the fun and you found a creative solution to fill your need.

All this blah blah was to overshadow the disdain at your $10 vice find. I never find cool stuff like that. I hate it when you guys find deals like that. :lol_hitti

I think you did pretty good. May not be steel, but think about the time and money on boards and fasteners had you chosen to build one. You came out waaay ahead if you look at it like that. Plus you get storage, and I won't even go into the hassle of building drawers from scratch. You won.

I'm back to working of the small top of a heavy steel framed cart. All the workbenches had been sold off, real estate issues in the shoppette.

No shame in living small if it works for you. My most used vise is a 2.5" cheapo, my other an as yet unused 3.5" gem. Home doesn't need bigger for me.

around here, the old lady "changes her mind" quite often, so i end up with a lot of the "leftovers"

i repurpose a lot of stuff for the garage and the basement reloading/workroom

I bought the 5 1/2" version of that vice in 1989. I've worked it hard and it still looks nearly as good as the day I bought it. That's a good vice, you'll be very happy with it (until you see a larger one, vice envy is a *****). $10 ? Way to go !

No shame in the bench you made either. You came up with a great solution to your problem, and got off cheap while doing it. I used a bedroom dresser that I pulled out of the trash as one of my benches for 15yrs, until it fell apart from abuse. That set up will keep you going for a while.

Good for you, OP. Just imagine how much more it would have cost you to build that bench from scratch. Great vice, too!
