Anything in paticular I should check out before use??

I have cleaned the grease from all the oil ports and have way oil flowing on to the ways now. I need to make sure the head bearings are getting oil I put some in there but I dont know how fast it should go down.

also the pulleys are pretty toast on the motor. are the hard to come by?

The M-head uses a total loss oiling system. You'll know they're getting oil if there's a dirty oil soaked line across the front of your shop apron. :)

If it has been greased, the only way to really clean it up is to disassemble the table and saddle. Although, if it moves OK I'd just shoot some oil in it and get to work.

A new pulley will likely be hard to source. What is wrong with the one you have?

Lookin' perty good there. Are the pictures in your shop or the sellers? If yours then how about a tour of the lathe and other shop pictures? What is the spindle taper in that machine? I have an old Index machine that was a BS9 that I had reground to an R8. I figured that by the time I rounded up all the BS9 tooling I would be money ahead to spend the~$200 to have it reground. Now years later I am still happy with the decision.

I would think a good motor pulley for an M-head should be easy to find. Try googling Plaza Machinery and see if Joe has one, he usually has a lot of Bridgeport stuff.

Might also want to make sure the existing pulley hasn't been modified. That ain't the original motor i'd guess. Might want to make sure buying an original m head pulley will even work without modification. If so, might want to just make a new pulley.

Thanks for all the comments..

I got to say I did not think it was really that bad to move.. But I had to excellent helpers, and I have moved many things with one of them we work pretty well together.. cherry picker, pipes, straps, and spud bar. went smooth :pimpflash

I am guessing the head bearings are not getting oil then. I didnt see any really running out or flinging. I will dig into that.. but it sounds pretty quiet to me..

Everything moves great.. I used some small brass tubing brushes and just squished the grease out of the ports, then followed by a good douching of atf, wd40 till I got filthy dirty oil flowing out of all the way areas. So I am assuming ports are clear. I am gonna flush some more oil threw it this weekend, and get some way oil for her..

Pulley looks like it lost a war with a puller.. smallest step is badly worn second step is chewed from the puller battle(I assume).. Works, but I will replace if possible...

Its in my shop.. I need to do a some walk around pics..

I am pretty sure its a Morse 2 taper.. at least I tried a known Morse taper item and it did fit tight..

The list at plaza says he has one

50. M head original motor pulley, excellent, $65.00

Getting in contact with Joe can take some time.
Awesome I will get in contact with him. Thanks both of you for the suggestion..

definitely not the original motor.. I will make sure the bore is the same..

Fellow Novice machinist here as well.

I have a M head that was made around '56 according to the serial number. Someone had changed the original 1200 rpm motor with a 1750rpm motor which increases the advertised spindle speeds. I didn't realize it at first, the motor tag was painted over.

Also, there were 3 possible tapers for the collets / tooling. Most common is the Morse No.2 taper. Next is the B&S #7. the third one I forget .
I unfortunately have the BS #7, BUT I did get a full set of collets with my machine.

Just some things to be aware of.

It shouldn't be flinging oil everywhere. Just that after an 8-hour day of use, you'll notice an oil streak on your apron about spindle height. :)

After a week of sitting with a full spindle oiler you should notice an oil spot on the table under the spindle.

this motor is definitely spinning faster I checked that when I got it home, not a huge amount but some faster then the labels..
I also got a full set of collets and drill chuck with the deal.. :p

My bridgy has a bad pulley as well. I bought a length of link belt instead of replacing the pulley. Works great and seems to transfer more torque.
