Been wanting one of these for a while and picked this up on fb marketplace, but I had to pay $150... I figured that the tools would help offset the cost a bit

It started out as the guy's dad's work chest at Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis. It cam with the original key, instruction label, and a bunch of misc and aircraft mechanic tools (12point Snap On & Blackhawk sockets/accessories and Bonney service pump wrenches).

Going to clean the gunk and rust off and lube up the drawers. I will eventually do a repaint, but I am in desperate need of storage in my garage.

Here are the remains of the label

The crowfoot wrenches are Plomb and some have an acid or ink stamp for Douglas

I was hoping more of a time capsule type of thing, but it looks like he put home type stuff mixed in, which I am not too sad about. It will come in handy with my first house and setting up the garage shop.

Definitely worth the effort to save. You won't know just how rough it is until you empty and clean it but I don't doubt it will probably be better off than it looks. Oh, and I wouldn't hesitate to pay that price even if it were empty. Well done!

I agree. it is pretty rusty, but straight. just wanted to get it so that if i rub against it i don't turn orange. Inflation put this is the $600 range today with a $80 something price in 1957

Yup, I'd have dropped 150 on that thing empty so let me say that you ****! (that's a good thing in here). I see a lot of Blackhawk in there?

Don't underestimate how much that thing will clean up. WD40, fine steel wool and a metric **** ton of elbow grease goes a long way. I've cleaned up handles that look as bad as yours that way and they look great now. Same for the body and drawers, scrub em down with WD40 and steel wool. I think you'll like the result. Those things look so much better with some age on them. And welcome to GJ!

Yeah. blackhawk/armstrong, Snap On, SK, Bonney, Plomb, and some misc V Craftsman. I had to look up what a free whell ratchet was cause I had never seen anything like it. I doubt anything is a complete. The sides are about 30% paint and the back is probably 10%. Where it has resided wasn't wet, but at some point it was definitely moist.

Oh, that is nice, great patina! No need to repaint that, perfect as it is. Also, about what I paid for mine in the same condition, except yours has the heritage label, which I like a little better than mine.

I was just about to say, "hey, I know someone who just picked up one of those," and then I saw "Twigger" and who posted. I need to see this box in person sometime and we can hunt for my grey and red Craftsman top box.

150 bucks for a heritage box loaded with Blackhawk and other quality tools? You did better than good. You can sell the Blackhawk stuff alone on Ebay and recover most, if not all of your purchase cost.

I went ahead and power washed and cleaned it with brake cleaner. The habitat for humanity had some 24x24 carpet squares for $2 so I lined the top and drawers with it
