Just picked up this DP600 at auction. Can anyone help with where a serial number should be? It's definitely been painted over at some point, all I have done so far is clean it off and put a cord on it. Still runs well.

From the first picture that tag looks like the very early Delta did not put ser # on there first production machines at least drill press's. that would date it somewhere from 1936-1938 if memory serves me. here is one I have as you can see noe ser# and no holes for drive screws.

You got one of the good ones. It doesn't take much more work and money to restore a 17" and it's much more machine than a 10", 12" or 14" DP.

Thanks, I think you're right. Damn thing is solid as a rock and runs true. It helps that I got it with 2 extra chucks and 3 or 4 new old stock bits still in the paper packaging all for $61!!

Thanks Bisley45 for that info. The nameplate you show is the first I have found that looks like the one on my machine. I may have actually found some mounting holes where I think the serial plate should be, but they seem to be much more spread apart than the measurements I've read about on the vintage machinery website. They certainly may have nothing to do with a serial number plate. I'll update this thread if I find anymore info.

Serial # should be on a tag riveted to the side opposite the feed handles.

Yep, right here:

Pwoodman, can you provide a photo of the whole DP from the front so we can see it all?

This is the best I have right now. I did some more paint removal and it looks like it has mounting holes 3.75" on center, placing it 1947-1952 according to what I've read.

I estimate approx. 1946 based on the serial number prefix (ie 44-xxxx)

What is the dimension of your serial plate? I feel like mine was 1947or later due to the longer plate, and 1952 or older due to the Milwaukee call out on the headstock, but my headstock decal looks older than the one you pictured. It does not have the safety warning on like it looks like yours does...
