New to me KR557 KR537

Just picked this up on saturday and started looking at it. I have not transfered anything over yet. The way some of the drawers move I might pull all of them out and clean and lube the slides. This is not really the box I wanted but it should work for now. My major complaint is that every drawer has these dividers built in. Will I lose much strength by removing the divider or will I decrease the value of the box? I noticed there are some people on here that really like these boxes.

The dividers add strength to the drawers and add value to the box. I highly recommend that you LEAVE them there.

I figured they add some strength but some are side to side and some are front to back. As far as value I was wondering if the next guy would like having storage options open vs. leaving it original. With that being said I am still open and willing to listen to opinions. Thank you OEXL16B.

I have the same set-up, 1980 vintage. Decent set of boxes, IMO.

I'm not partial to the divider's, but removing them would cause problem's like mentioned. It's not really a problem for me anyway as my Brother is using the boxes .

Snap-on has a drawer remover tool but I dont remember the part no. off hand. I used silicone spray on my KRA-59 drawer slides and it worked well (just dont get it all over, kill's o2 sensor's)

I wouldn't mess with the dividers. Especially if you want to resell it down the line, which it sounds like you will. You'll greatly decrease the value.

Well sound like I might leave them in place. I talked to the snap on guy today about letting me know if he gets something used.

that is a great box, I have had several of the over the years and just love them.
they must have sold tons of them because I see a bunch still out there

one of my versions dosent have any of the drawer dividers so I suspect that you will not loose much strenth my removing them.....but before you do why dont you try using them to your advantage for organization purposes

you can rearrange same size drawers to fit your needs without removing the spot welded dividers.

i don't like them either but they serve a purpose and that purpose is to strengthen the drawer and hold more weight

on the current snap on boxes, the way they make the drawers rigid is a few thin channel strips under the drawer.

well I plan on keeping it for atleast a short time. I will leave the dividers and once it cools down a lot outside I will start moving stuff over. Thank you for everyones input

I have the same top box, and left the dividers as they came from the factory. I was able to organize the box to fit my needs with the dividers just the way they are. I especially like the 7 narrow drawers for all the small stuff.

Now if I could just find a matching KR557 roller locally.........

I have one of these top/ bottom combos (mine is shown in the link by Dark Monohue). I was able to work around the dividers, but admittedly it would be better without them. I ended up hanging a HF sidebox on it for extra room. The color is close and when the chrome pull covers are removed, it looks pretty close to the original SO box.

Put it on for $600 and I think you'll sell it. For $500, if I needed it, I'd be on my way immediately to pick it up.

there are a few on craigslist, two at two different pawn shops. I really don't know of a vintage following around here. There are also two dealers in town.

Of course prices can vary, but the ones I gave are fairly universal. In some areas, like parts of Kansas, Ohio, etc, these would fetch closer to 800 to 1000. People who live in those areas have mentioned how rare old quality toolboxes are. I don't think they'd go for much less anywhere else. Personally, I wouldn't sell them for less than $500.
