Looks like this is a late 40s to early 50s 1100. Bought it to replace my guardian drill press. Seller said it didn't run, but it had a 1/2hp motor, so I was already going to replace it. Got it home and found the hot wire going into the motor was pinched and shorted. So I guess for now I'll put it back together and use it. I'd like to put a 3ph motor on it but I'm out of vfds so it'll have to wait.

I need to make a new locking lever/wrench for the table. I picked up a 15/16 socket today to make that from.

It came with a heavy xy table and vise. I don't know if I'll use those or not but it's a flat table so I can see them coming in handy.

I've been using drill presses since I was a teenager, both at home and work. Never saw the need for a cross slide vise on one.

I've been using drill presses for only the past 40 years or so, but I can name several occasions it would have been handy. Repeat work, for example, can be done more easily. Combined with a boring head, correctly sized holes in the right location can be made without needing to break down a setup on the milling machine.

I'm making a new table lock wrench. The cast one that was on it was missing most of the 12 point section. I could probably make a new section and braze it but I think a steel version would be a lot tougher.

Decided to get a picture of the old and new. Unfortunately the sun was going down so it's not a great pic. And the new one is on a pallet so I could move it easier but even discounting the additional 5" it towers over the old 12 speed Guardian.

So I ran this drill press once with the motor that was on it. After about 10 minutes, smoke started rolling out of the motor, which explains why somebody had opened it up in the first place. I picked up a 3/4 HP repulsion start motor for a few bucks. Not my first choice of motor but it was available and works. It's heavy, of course. But I managed to get it installed. Picked up a belt that fits as this motor is bigger than the 1/2 hp that I took off.

Built an arm to help with the lifting.

Very nice. Not sure if I have seen the 1100 with slo speed. Don’t see many 1100, period. The x/y is a great anchor for a vise, that’s for sure.
