Picked this up at an auction the other day, and was just wondering if any of you vise guys could give me any additional info on it. It has 6 inch jaws and 4 1/4 inches all the way open. To my eye it doesn't look ancient, but seems to be pretty well made.

Basic exposed screw unit. Didn't know they made those in a 6" variety, typically see 3.5 and 5" models.

$20. Is this model inherently bad?

There are vise models that range from industrial grade with heavier duty components made from stronger material, to lower cost models that are adequate for less demanding needs of hobbiests and homeowners, as well as lighter uses in repair shops.

Your vise is not one of the industrial grade vises. But Clean it up, paint it and mount it on your workbench.. It will do exactly what it was designed to do: Hold objects while you work on them.. Your $20 was well spent

Good! That's all I need it to do. I thought I surely couldn't go wrong spending $20 on a US made vise. It is in great shape aside from paint and I will rectify that very shortly, I already have it torn down on the bench awaiting cleaning and paint.
