Been a while since I've updated anyone on this. I originally decided to keep the boxes. Wanted to clean them up and use them as is... until...
I cam home from work a back in February and went out to the garage to look for something when I saw the boxes laying on the floor, face first. I was stunned. I walked over to them to examine and was floored. From what I could tell, it looked like one of the castors gave way, unless one of the kid's is keeping a secret and has yet to tell me. I never questioned them, but they were home before me and claim to have heard nothing. The whole box fell forward and onto it's face. The left side that had damage actually split apart from the fold and bowed outwards under the weight of everything. All the left side drawers were bent and tools were spilling out of them with random bits strewn across the garage. Thankfully it didn't land on my Jeep and cause any damage there, or either of the kid's bikes.
It took the neighbor and me to maneuver the top box and get it up before I could see how badly damaged it was. The top was tweaked, and every one of the rails for the drawers broke. I think it landed on the right corner first before landing on it's face cause a big twist in the whole unit.
I was so mad and upset at the time I didn't get any pictures of the wreckage. I stormed off and went to Wal-Mart and bought 4 or 5 20gal totes and just started tossing everything into them. I called a friend of mine and he came and picked up the mangled box to dispose of it. Looking back I shouldn't have acted the way I did... but I was way upset, and I have a problem with situations I can't control.
I told my uncle what had and he said he saw something like it once before in a shop he worked at. One of the castors broke and the whole thing toppled over.
In my haste I also made a trip to Home Depot and purchased a 42" rolling work bench as I told the tool's guy what happened and he cut me a deal on one with a small split in the wood top.
So I've been sorting and cleaning and trying to arrange some tools that I will use most often into the work bench and keeping the others in boxes and totes until I have proper room for them. Me and my girlfriend, soon to be fiance, are looking at buying a house of our own at the beginning of next year, so I won't be buying any more tool boxes until after we have a permanent home. When that time comes, I'll probably buy a couple of the HF 44" boxes that I read so much about.
Anywho, just thought I'd share... not looking for sympathy or anything, just a story, and a reminder to inspect your castors.
