Hey Everyone

My name is Curtis, I’m 21 and I go to school at The University of Kentucky. I feel like I’ve read just about every single post on this forum, and thought it's about time I finally post something!

I don’t really have many tools yet, but I love seeing pictures of all your guys’ tools, hoping to have a collection like some of you all do one day! My dad has a moderate collection of Snap On tools that I’ve always used from restoring my first car in my garage when I was 16, a 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia:

This is the other thing I’ve been working on this past summer, a 1984 Barth Regal 25’:

My daily driver is a 1992 Volvo 240 wagon

Anyways, here are some pictures the tools that are actually MINE! I know they’re nothing special, especially compared to some of you guys, but hey, they’re MINE, and you have to start somewhere, right?!?

Well there are my tools, hope I didn’t post too many pictures…

Let me know what you guys think

I love it when a lurker comes out of the shadows...I hope you become a regular poster.

Looks like you have a good set of basic tools to get you going and take care of a lot of the jobs you are going to come across. The wrench set looks nice.

Are there are brands you are loyal to, and want to get more of?

Neat projects, too. Not my thing, but neat anyway!

Welcome aboard....

You have a much better set than I did at your age... Its not about what the brand your tool is ... It's how you use them... Use yours well!!!

I know it's a 7/16" GM Goodwrench, but how do you tell if it's US made or not?

EDIT: sk farmer, from looking at your post about the 7/16", it would look as it is the one you're looking for, #41414. I inherited these wrenches from my grandpa, who shopped at Sam's Club a lot, so that is most likely where he got them. Only this is I'm missing the 9/16", 15mm, and 11mm. Maybe one day I'll come across them though

No apologies necessary there, you've got more tools than I did at the age of 21, for sure. In another... ohh, 28 years or so... you'll have a lot more. :D

Oh, oh, oh! And your daily is a '92 Volvo 240 wagon! I am a huge Volvo freak! I have a '84 240 that I did some major work on, full rebuild... it blew the motor a couple months ago, but I am getting another this spring. I also have a '95 850, and my brother has a '94 850. His first car was an '88 240 wagon, off white. What color is yours?

Welcome aboard. The only thing I really missed on your tool layout was at least a 3# heavy hammer. That is a must for things that don't want to be repaired. I don't smash stuff myself, but it would add some weight to your baggage....TIM

Welcome!

You have a good start there, just the right size and diversity for an over-the-road tool kit. In fact, you have many of the tools I carry when I hit the road.

As your tool collection grows, so will your knowledge and capabilities.

Welcome to the board.. good little start to your collection. I'll warn you now to stay away from the classifieds. You'll find yourself with double that amount of tools in short time... then you'll have the same sickness as the rest of us. Trolling the classifieds, craigslist and pawn shops for neat tool "gems" haha.

Nice VW.. I know there are a few other aircooled vw enthusiasts here as well.

that would be the creature i am looking for, same place i bought mine from also. if i am correct they were only about 20 bucks for 1/4 to 3/4. so i think you may be missing more than you think. i am kid of funny about sets so keep me in mind if you find something better, i would make it worth your time. i also understand the sentimental value. nice to have grandpa's stuff.

Great pics and welcome. If you hang here long enough, you'll learn the tools to buy and the ones to avoid. Purchase wisely and used when you can. Look for older less known American made brands, they can be had cheap and are often close to truck brand quality. Ask for specific make and model tools for Christmas and birthday presents. I personally reccomend high quaitly pliers and dykes. I like Snap on and Knipex. Thanks for posting.

Welcome, I can tell with the campers and the Volvo, you have some good style.

And some pretty nice tools to start off with too, I have that same "GM" socket set in my "name brand Taiwan" pile, I have been sorting tools for a month in my garage.

I will have to post a picture of it someday, but I have a safari rack with for a 240 wagon from a long time ago, and it ONLY fits a Volvo 240 wagon, I might get rid of it soon.

Welcome!
I love the VW camper van. Were those done by VW, or were they a conversion by another company? Is that what they called a microbus back then? Is yours a Kombi (or is it Combi)?
When I was young, my dad had a VW van for a while. We took quite a few vacations in it. One night, it sucked a valve and he ended up trading it for a '41 Ford.

As far as the Volkswagen Camper goes, Westfalia was a conversion company that would receive A bare, stripping Bus from the VW factory, and outfit it with just about everything from the front seats, to the pop top, to the sink/stove/fridge.

Here are a couple more pictures of the Bus:

As far as the hammer/pliers tool goes, I received it as a gift a couple years ago. I figured I might need a hammer for some little things around my apartment, and it was either than or a big framing hammer that wouldn't even fit in my bag. It doesn't have any name or markings on it that I can seem to find, but it feels well built, and should be able to handle any projects I have while in this apartment. Or atleast anything my landlord would approve of me doing!

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't posted on here in few months (been busy and side tracked)....this thread brought me back. I have always liked those pop up VWs. That sir is a VERY CLEAN one! Did you guys get it like that or did you restore it back to that shape? Looks great!

Good start to the tool collection...like others said soon you will be on CL, pawn shops, flea markets etc....soon that collection will grow fast! Then its hard not buying spares, seconds, plomb, etc.....

Thanks for sharing the pictures. :)

Welcome to the board and keep posting. You have a nice set of tools. Much better set of tools and skills than I had at that age. I didn't get into my first car teardown till about 5 years ago. I am completely hooked on projects and tools now.

Might want to go look up the thread on next tools to get/wanted. It will give you some great ideas on how to start building out your collection.

Looks like a nice start there. Keep em clean and use the right tool for the job. They will last a long time. I really hope the Force passes you by, but since your here, I fear there is little hope for you!

Neat projects you have there. Keep up the good work.

One more thing..........

Thanks!

I can't seem to find any pictures from the day I brought it home (I was 16 and taking pictures wasn't "cool" then). But here are some pictures of right before I pulled out the windows to take it over to a friend who was doing the body work.

I forgot to post these pictures before, but here are my other couple tools. When I purchased my VW, I actually purchased it from the original owner. Every once in awhile he'll stop my my house and drop off something he found, that he thought I might be interested in. This time it was A Hazet tool kit! I'd love to find the pieces it's missing one day
