I'm new this forum so I will start out with what drew me to this site. I like old tools and have an interest in refurbishing my old Columbian bench vise. I'm not interested in painting it but would like it to have the old raw iron finished look. I'm not sure of the correct method or process to do this and I'm looking for some input. My first thought was to maybe heat the metal up in the oven then apply some kind oil an oil to penetrate in and give it that wet look. Maybe I'm way off base on this so please add anything that you might have learned. Pictures might be nice to add if you have done the same as I'm looking for. Thanks

Flh: you should have posted this in the introductory section or one of the vise threads, but since you are a new member ill help you until the Mods move it.

Wire wheel off old crud and paint and then add several coats of boiled linseed oil letting each coat dry before applying the new one. We just talked about it in vintage tool section in vise repair 101 thread that has plenty of other ways to fix your vise. There is also a huge thread in the general tools section that has a lot of vise info.

Ask questions and post pictures if you still have any.

Welcome

Mods: can you move to intro thread?

Nutts: thanks again man you are awesome.

FLH: here's a big Reed 4C i own with BLO (boiled linseed oil) on it so you can see what your vise might look like. good luck and again ask questions or plenty to read about vises here if you have time.

FLH: no need to apologize, but appreciate you saying so. just ask questions if you have any about the forum and try to find the best threads to ask specific questions about the subjects you want to know more of. also post up pictures if at all possible and you are welcome to post a few pictures here of your cool stuff or something you like. of course there are a few rules about pictures which are pretty straight forward and just ask if you have questions.

good luck and hope you find plenty to read and learn here. i still learn something every time i read or post questions here because there is a lot of knowledge behind some of those minds that belong here.
