New tool box w/upgrades

Thought id do my first post about my newest "tool". I upgraded from a harbor fright 13 drawer box to this because I just did not like the size of the drawers and i was out growing it fast.

Got this from out snap-on guy for "cheap" since he has had it for a while when someone ordered it then changed there mind. never thought I would have a blue box but after talking to him about what I could do with it I went ahead with it and I love it.

As it came off the truck


I was not a fan of the chrome so we went about changing it all out for black.
first the chrome uprights got changed out.


I love most anything carbon fiber so when he said they make carbon drawer guards and center decal I was sold.


wrapped the logo in carbon fiber vinyl just for fun.


Then got rid of the chrome drawer trim.

Finally got the new worktop for it. Its the same as the stainless steel top just with a linex surface.

Nice looking box! I have the same one with a hutch on top of it.. I have a top box on order because mine is full! Great upgrades that you have made

How did you switch from chrome drawer trim to the black? Was it hard to remove? I have a blue classic 78 I would love to dress up just like you did.

Its real easy. But you will need to check with your snap-on guy to see if he has the crimping tool for installing them. Each trim piece has 2-4 indents on the back side of them. All I used was a puffy knife and you start at one end and just wiggle it back and forth to loosen it up some and then you slide the trim off one side or the other. You can't go straight down with it. Snap-on makes a tool to then crimp on the new trim without putting any marks on it.

No they were replaced with back ones. The only vinyl is on the snap-on logo

Not sure on the cost for just them. He just gave me a price on everything when I bought the tool box. I just had to wait for all the pieces to be ordered in. So I got to do all the updates to it.

The mods look good; take a common item and make it unique and personalized.

I recently modified some boxes as well. I found these Lyon bases and Husky top boxes on Craigslist and needed them fit in the space in and around my existing benches and table saw. The heights were the defining dimensions.

I made some bases with edged plywood and some casters, bolted/lagged the boxes to the base and then made a wood top for them. I can use the tops for work surfaces and for tools.

I have since rearranged the Husky boxes: I took the low middle drawer and base up to the car shop to use as a kind of tool creeper and moved the upper drawer unit to one of the work benches. I replaced this whole unit with another CL find: a Craftsman 5 drawer base roller. I still need to make a wood top for the Craftsman so it matches everything else.
