I have an Atlas 618 that is in need of a good clean and refurbishment. So one of the 1st upgrades I invested in was a quick change tool post from Amazon. Now I actually see it I wonder about options. The tool post is OK, but will not hold most of the tools that came with the lathe. OXA is the recommended size for my lathe but it seems way to small. Will I have any issues with a larger qctp? And if it's OK then what size?

Are you trying to use the original Armstrong style toolholders in it? The quick change ones generally hold the cutter directly so no need for the older ones.

Well not sure which way to go with that. I have a set of Armstrong tools but also quite a few cutters that would mount directly. Along with a random selection of tool inserts. I would ideally like to simplify what I actually use.
The biggest difference is the boring bar holder. My original one will take a 5/8 bar, and I would like to at least keep that option even though I might rarely use it.

my Myford ML7 also uses an OXA, and it is small.
I also ordered an AXA qctp thinking the OXA was so small... but the AXA was too big for my lathe.

I wish the AXA would have worked as I do find the OXA to small... but without major modifications it wasn't gonna happen.

That is the kind of information I was looking for. My Atlas is close in size to your Myford.
Which also brings back memories. I first learned turning on Myford many years ago in my first job.

QCTP sizes have a little variance in the swing they fit, but the problem you run into is keeping your tools on center within the adjustment range of the tool block.

That little lathe is going to struggle with running the larger tools, especially the inserted carbide. If you're dead set on running that tooling, you can make your own toolholders that will interface with the QCTP. Otherwise you can modify the shanks of the toolholders to fit, but then they're forever small.

For the bigger cutters, I'd make a custom mount that engages directly with the compound. All you need is a way to mount it. You could even re-use the tee nut and screw from the QCTP.

If it was my lathe, I'd just get some cutters that are within the size range of what the machine can run well.

And that is what I have decided to do.
I had wanted to use all the original tools but I have come to the realization that it won't work, so new tools it is. And I will be able to get replaceable carbide bits this way. Usability is what it is all about.
