I noticed in our Lowes that they are filling a lot of the socket/ratchet space now with Stanley. This started about a month ago. Anyone seeing this in their Lowes?

Coach

No not USA but china. I noticed this as well at our local Lowes and it seems to be overtaking the Kobalt stuff.

Not to Hijack your thread but menards has still got some decent tools. There Masterforce line seem to be decent. Some of it is still USA made. They do have there taiwan brand junk too Tool shop is the overseas line. And they have a bottom barrel line too not sure what brand that is.

Stanley tools at Lows? Well I have some news. I just purchased a complete set of Stanley 1/4 drive 80 something piece at Walmart. This set has the black finish with gold number. With my discount and it on sale it was like $35.Shallow and deep 6 point with blow molded case.

Just had a thread on this topic the other day... Most Masterforce stuff is USA, and is the Menards store brand. They are now also selling Crescent brand hand tools, (probably China and/or Taiwan) which seems to me like their "brand name" import line. Then there is Tool Shop, which is bottom of the barrel no name import. They might have some even shittier gimmick import tools from time to time too, just for good measure.

The Stanley stuff at Lowes is basically just a replacement for Blue hawk and is barely a step above Blue Hawk in quality. I do like the fact the ratchets are pear head and not round head, but for the price i'll stick with HF's Pittsburgh Pro which is comparable to the Kobalt ratchets.

The Walmart here has been carrying Stanley for a few years.

Masterforce is their mostly made in USA top of the line store brand. Performax is the next level down. Then there is tool shop which is harbor freight level quality

As far as I know Lowes is a place where you can special order a lot of different brands of tools if you are willing to pay the price. When I visited a Lowes tool department they were stocking Kobalt hand tools as their store brand. I could be wrong but if you don't buy Kobalt from them they don't give warranty service. The other brands they sell have to be mailed in to get warranty. Things might be different now.

FWIW About ten years ago I needed tools for road service work. I went to walmart and bought stanley, I supplemented it with husky stuff which was made by stanley at the time. I never ever broke any of it besides wearing out the teeth in the ratchets. I abused, beat, etc xInfinity. Never busted a socket, wrench or anything of the sort.

Bluehawk is utter **** my boss bought a few sets for the guys and the ratchets fell apart.

A lot of the "Asian" hand tools are becoming better quality; unfortunately, or fortunately however you look at it.
Many of us don't want to pay the exorbitant price of a Knipex, Channel-Lock, Snap-On or Klein tool. (though I am partial to Knipex)
(incidentally, Snap-On's "bluepoint" series is made in Taiwan.

They used to all be USA made!

Home Depot sold a line of Stanley tools with the Handyman Series brand name about 26 years ago. The screwdrivers and wood chisels had yellow handles. They were made in the USA. Some say they were marketed to homeowners and occasional users. However, those tools could take a beating and would not break.

Over about the past 10 years Walmart has been selling Stanley wrench sets and socket sets among other tools. They were made offshore the last time I checked them and I don't know how durable they are.

From what I understand the Stanley brand of tools is common in the home improvement and home building industry. Lowe's is probably hoping to make some money off of Stanley tools by selling them as a value line to their customers.

Saw this thread earlier today, then made a trip to Lowe's to see what they have in the tool section.

Picked up these Kobalt screwdrivers on clearance, marked made in USA with domestic & foreign components by Great Neck. They all have hex bolsters and metal striking caps except the stubby versions.

Most of their screwdriver selection was China, with the exception of these demo drivers (or as Lowe's calls them, mechanics screwdrivers) and the clear acetate handled drivers that look like Craftsman WF.

#525784 5/16 slotted x 6" $3.59
#525789 #3 Philips x 6" $3.59
#525782 3/16 slotted x 4" $2.79
#525787 #1 Philips x 3" $2.79

They also had a 1/4 slotted I did not buy, as well as a #2 Philips stubby. No long #2 :-( but still I think a good deal. They feel substantial.

Hey guys I went to Sears today and what a bunch of assholes.....

You aren't earning any kudos here bud as a new member. Shouldn't treat anybody like that, especially when they actually were going to accept your POS, abused tools for an exchange.

I'd be fired on the spot if you treated me like that in the store.
