Jason Ga,

Is there a reason why you purchased the Sunflag 205-S screwdrivers in addition to the top model 888, thru-handle, steel capped screwdrivers?

Which aspects of the model 205-S screwdrivers lured you to purchasing them?

Thanks,

Dave

Jason Ga,

Do you own any other Japanese; or high-end American and European makes of combination wrenches?

If yes, how is the initial quality of the Asahi wrenches compare to the others?

After using the Asahi combination wrenches for a while, would you mind reporting back on their durability and ability to remove fasteners (rusted and/or stuck) with both ends?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

I got them both mainly just to have something different in my toolbox. I have some sunflag scrapers which have similar handles to the 205-S screwdrivers, so I knew I would like them. The 888's actually were much nicer than I thought they would be. They feel... "heavier" I guess than I thought they would from the picture. I think they will soon become favorites, next project I have I can use them on. Need to see how the tips perform. Mainly though, I needed more screwdrivers like I need a hole in the head.

I just like having different stuff, I like variety in my tool box, and if I start getting too much of one brand, I'll buy something different "just because." I have 2 sons, 2 daughters, and 2 step-sons, so I don't mind having a bunch of duplicates (or triplicates), as I will one day need to put together a starter set for each of them... at least the boys. I don't know that my oldest daughter has much inclination towards tools. Too early to tell for my newest addition. (Youngest daughter is 7 months old)

Wrenches...

I have a set of USA Mac combination wrenches that were my go-to wrenches when I was a tech full time. I also have a set of Snap-On flank drive combination wrenches. Honestly, I think the Snap-Ons are better, but I always grabbed my Macs... I think I bought them first and sort of grew attached to them. I also have 2 or 3 sets of cheaper brands that I let the kids use (c-man, genius, etc.) No real European high end wrenches. I do have a small Teng set that was part of a kit I purchased, but they seem more in the category of mid to lower end.

I'm really not sure how I feel about the Asahi wrenches, other than they are different. I intend to use them next chance I get. They are kind of thick, but you can see the tapering on the ends in the picture. I think when I really pull them, I will think it was a really great, or really bad idea!

As far as a review goes, I'll be happy to report back, but it will be some time before they see any heavy use (I hope). Other than fixing my own stuff, and the occasional starter, alternator, or brake job for a friend, I don't really do much heavy shop work anymore, so I am probably not a good source for an in-depth review.

I just like getting different tools, and Frank is a great resource, and seems to steer me in the right direction. I have bought a few items based on his recommendation.

Frank can get all kinds of stuff not on his site. The site is kind of a work in progress, and he has been busy with his real job lately. Best bet is to e-mail him. He responds quickly, and can usually send pics or links.

Jason Ga,

Thanks for responding to my above questions. I had a positive purchase experience with LevelChrome this year. Based on your recommendation, I will try Frank from Frankstools.com for my next Japanese hand tool order.
