Has anyone ever bought a new tool that they thaught they needed but never used? What is it?

When I ordered my new 350 block it was said to have come without cam bearings so I bought the cam bearings and the cam bearing installer tool. When the block showed up from Summit Racing it had the cam bearings already installed

Yeah I have done that, but if I buy the tool right, ( I usually do) I have found that many times somewhere down the road I ultimately end up using the tool. I definitely never worry about having unused tools of any kind for woodworking (don't do much) or metal around. Always remember the old addage he who dies with the most tools wins!! :bounce:

Dayum! That's one of the biggest pictures I've ever seen posted in a forum! I think I'm going to have to hook my 'puter up to my 50-inch TV. :shocking:

Oh yeah! I've bought a bunch of tools in the past 3 months and just havent had a chance to use them yet. It's too cold out there. They're just sitting in the garage, rusting, waiting for nice weather.

new 8pt sockets, viking grinders/drill, Actually, ive got a set of counter bores that Ive never used. They appear to be brand new, cutting edges are prestine and they were about to be heaped into the dumpster so I said "ill take them" God I love it when people are ignorant. lol

I have a gorgeous set of Snap-on and Craftsman Tappet wrenches, A set of Crowfoot wrenches, A set of ratcheting line wrenches and like Kartracer55 a nice new set craftsman 8 sided sockets. The tappets I got because the lifters on my flat head have been tapping since I bought it. The crowfoot wrenches were for a tight fuel line on my old truck. Sold the truck. The ratcheting line wrenches and the 8 side because you just never know.

Snap on 36pc impact driver set I bought in new condition for half of on cragislist so it's not really a big deal I suppose. I just haven't ran into a screw tight enough but I have used the bits on my ratchets.

Half tenth (50 millionths) indicator. Nothing we do is that accurate. Heck, my .0005" does the job 99% of the time anyways.

Some might find this odd, but close to 10 years ago years ago I bought several Makita tools. I have used them all, some of them (angle grinders and drills) often, with the exception of the sawz-all. Tried it out when I bought it and haven't used it since. I don't do any demolition and for everything else I find they make a mess of your work. At work sometimes I use one, but mine at home has yet to be used.

Haven't figured out what it will become, but when I saw it I just knew it would be a good candidate for modifying into a different tool.. :D

I got a Koken 24mm 3/8" impact socket that was going cheap on ebay. Don't think i've ever needed a 24mm socket but it looked so well designed and made....

Other things like screwdriver sets i'll buy if they are on special offer and put by till needed.

O-ratchet, used it maybe four times. Got the Gearwrenches, and it hasn't been out of its case since then.

I have one of those pass through ratchets. I just bought it for the heck of it but always reach for a ratcheting wrench in lieu of that turd.

I bought a DeWalt hammer drill and 4 1/2" grinder combo kit from Lowe's on a sick clearance sale, haven't used either yet. I have a bunch of jobs coming up though, so they'll certainly get their use.

I bought one to for a customer that said he was comming in at the end of the week to do the water pump on his ecotec... he never showed up I think that was 4 years ago. The water pumps must be pretty good because I have worked on alot of cars with ecotecs and never done a water pump on one.

I needed one flare wrench to change a fuel filter (DIY, not a pro). Somehow, I ended up collecting sets of SO flare wrenches in sae and metric. Guess how many of those I've used? :lol_hitti

Anybody going to admit to buying 4.5mm and 20mm sockets just to fill their Hansen/HF style trays?

A MAC timing gear wrench set. The kind with an assortment of different plastic gizmos that fit the teeth of the timing gears for turning them to line up the timing marks. Always just used a wrench on the cam bolt prior to buying it and just kept doing it that way out of habit. Now that I'm retired and mostly wrenching on vintage V8 muscle cars I put it on Ebay & sold it for just about what I had paid. Never even took it out of the box.

I've got a few tools I don't even know what they are until the need arises and that's what they become.

Here's one specialty tool set neither any of you nor I have been able to identify.

I said the same thing until I had a use for my set...needed a low-profile socket that would go into a small recess. My pass-thru socket set was the only thing I could find to work. Made my day :)
