So I recently decided to build up an acetylene torch rig and when I went to find a cart, I was faced with something either real rickety or really expensive. Then I found this nitrogen tank cart in the local ads for $100 that got my wheels spinning.

After cutting the deal and picking it up, I began by cutting away the upper rail and adding more 1 1/4 tubing to make a frame more suited to the purpose. I also added a 1/4 inch steel plate to the bottom that I had laying around.

Once the framing was complete, I welded in some bottle holders made from 1-1/4 flat stock and welded the original handle to the top of the frame. The original cart was powder coated green, so I just prepped and painted the weld areas and new structure. Krylon John Deere green was a dead nuts match. Shown in 3rd pic is the HF rubber self stick tiles I used as pads for the bottles. Not shown in the pictures is a tractor toolbox that will mount to back of cart to store the torch and tips. I’ll post pics later when the box is painted and mounted.

Thanks, it’s less than perfect but it will do. I was disappointed to find that the original uprights were .060 tubing which made welding the .125 tubes I added a little more of a challenge. Original cart is rated to 1000 lbs so I’m in the way overkill department on weight capacity.

It’s fun to get an idea in your head and build it into reality.

Thanks, the typical carts I found seemed like they could tip over pretty easy, this setup seems like it will be way more stable. Only downside is it’s shop only, I won’t be able to drag this outside where there is no pavement. Some carts have bigger wheels that would allow “offroad” use.
