Wife sent me a CL ad.

Company moving further out in the suburbs.

Picked up an 8" Milwaukee metal cutting saw for $100.

Also a Dewalt DWS709 12" sliding compound dual bevel miter saw for #100.

Got a set of National Oxy/Hydrogen torch, regulators, hose and a tip for flame polishing acrylic. $20.

They threw in a fan and a couple of welding clamps and a respirator.

What I really drooled over was an Ironman for $1000. A Geka Hydrocrop 55A! They go for 11 grand.

Also a SCMi vertical band saw on a cool custom looking aluminum base for $300. Missing the fence though. I really need a vertical metal band saw. Maybe I'll see if they still have it Monday.

I would love to know if that Geka Hydrocrop 55A is still available. I am semi local and would be able to pick up for sure. Would it be possible for you to share the contact information?

I am working on seeing if I can get it. If not, I'll let you know.

Bill

Do you realize how much it weighs and the electrical requirement??

My Piranha P50 takes everything my 7.5 Hp phase converter can give it..... I really need to upgrade to a 15hp phase converter.....

And where would you even put it? Keep in mind to even use it, it needs space around it to maneuver the steel into it.... :headscrat:headscrat

Candidly, that thing needs to be in a shop where it can get used!

Not to be Mr. Negative, but let's be real............

What does one do with the fence on a metal cutting vertical saw? I don't think I could ever cut a better line with using a fence vs. hand-feeding to a layout line....maybe my guides are messed up on the saws I use but the blade naturally wanders.

Something is wrong if a Geka 55 is selling for $1k. One should approach with all sensors set to extreme suspicion.

I've decided the iron worker is beyond my needs.

So I'm sending info to ZJHeyde.

Bill
I got an ironworker for free, it was so big I had to give it to a friend. From the pictures, I thought it was a much smaller model. This one looked to be way too big for your shop IMHO

Everything is too big for my shop.

I've got so many tools stuffed in there, that it's mouse proofed. They couldn't get in if they wanted!:bounce:

Bill, Good for you on passing on the Geka.... I fully understand why you would want it.

Keep focusing on your welding classes and getting your home shop set up so you can have space to do some projects.

I was going to go and look at, and possibly purchase the SCMi vertical band saw.

After some further research this morning, I find that it is a wood band saw, that they have been using for cutting aluminum. By all accounts, SCMi is a very good quality woodworking band saw, but I have reservations about damage from it's use as a metal cutting saw.

And while I would like a good wood saw someday, a metal one is first in line.

Bill -- I would recommend setting your sights on a Delta Milwaukee 14" vertical band saw. Some of the vintage ones have an extra gear box built in that allow it to run slower for a metal blade and faster for the wood cutting. I currently have one and am in the process of getting it all set up. I recently installed a new cord and plug and got it connected to my rotary phase converter. (It is 3-phase). I bought a metal cutting blade, but have not had a chance to install it.... I think I paid about $100 for mine. It has the art deco cast iron base.

Since you are tight on space, this would give you the flexibility for metal or wood with a relatively small foot print.

Granted, you would need to do some cleaning when switching between wood and metal, but so be it.....

That Delta is nice! I especially like the cast iron base.

I added a reduction gear to my Jet import. I have a separate bandsaw for wood and a tabletop one for aluminum.

Well, it looks like I can't be trusted to do what I decide.

Went and looked at the saw and plunked down the money. It's Italian made and needs cleanup inside and out. Also no fence. SC600 is the model with 24" wheels. Runs good on 3PH 20A circuit 3 1/2HP.

Rented a UHaul 5x8 trailer for Friday morning.

They will put it on with a forklift. Don't know how I'll get it off. It's on a nice aluminum rolling base. Maybe make a ramp? Restrain with a come-along.

Looks like this one:

The owner did mention that he quoted me a "too low" price on this the other day, and had since looked up what they go for.

BTW, the GEKA was a similar thing. He had a lot of inquires and it went for $5,500. They still have a Unisaw for $250, or maybe it's a JET.

Picked it up with a 5x8 UHaul trailer. Just $20 for the day plus $8 insurance.

Got it home and had a dickens of a time getting it off the trailer. Tethered it to my Bridgeport and pulled the van and trailer out a bit at a time to remove it. Used loose ropes to steady it. Inserted a plywood ramp under it. Slow and shaky process.

When I got there to pick it up, they still had a table saw, make unknown. I looked for a name tag and found one that said Rockwell. It had a 1/ 1/2HP 3Ph motor. Offered $200 and they took it! Loaded it along with an extra long fence guide rail they made for it.

Didn't really realize what it was until I got home. It was something I have always wanted......a 1954 10" Delta Rockwell Unisaw!

Hmmm. Interesting...

I'm glad you were able to get them off the trailer safely. Sounds like you will need some caster wheel bases build for each machine. I'm suspecting you will need to be able to roll them into the driveway to be able to use them?

I hear that Strouty just picked up a boat load of casters.....

Fyi--i have my table saw on a large base that has fixed wheels on one end and swivel casters on the other end. The direction of movement is perpendicular to the direction of the sawing. It seems to work quite well. I don't have locking casters, but it would be better if they were. Regardless, I have not had issues with it.moving while sawing...

What do you have for a 3-phase power source?

Just a static converter for the Bridgeport and a VFD I've never hooked up.

I'll get a photo, but the vertical band saw has a wonderful custom aluminum rolling base on casters, that they made up at the company I got it from.

On the Unisaw, the fence mechanism looks like this:

eb74fd27c0cd91c008d22b2cf2766f2e.jpg

The custom rail that came with it is 8' 6" long or so.

Actual rail and fence attached.

The Italian made bandsaw was produced in June 1990.

Picked up another Unisaw today. They seem to be falling from the sky!

$90

3HP single phase.

Not the bullet motor but a Delta one. The main reason I got it is the motor.

No egg motor cover or fence but has the original switch and louvered door. Plus it has both wings.

No plug and a mite dusty and rusty. Could use a new cord and cleaning.

Hand wheels need keys for the shafts, but they operate the saw with a nail in their place.

Photos when I get it out of the van later tonight (Wife doesn't know).

That iron worker seemed like a too good to be true price, probably if you had bought it right then and there, they would have honored it. I would have been all over it for a grand, over five, not so much. The base to the bandsaw looks really well made.

Out of the Astro Van. Had to walk it down a plywood ramp and up the sidewalk (No handcart). Man that thing is heavy with the big 3HP motor!

Wife none the wiser!

Photos in the morning before school.

I've got to have bigger walking around money, and always tow a trailer.

He would have honored it on the spot, I'm sure of it.

Then I would have 4 big tools in my driveway, instead of just 3!

The base for the bandsaw is just the right thing, as the mfg. does not recommend fixing it to the floor. Just got the manual for it today from SCM Group.

Strouty, Tell me about your casters!

Edit: I went and looked......Wow!

Tools are meant to be used.... not take up space in the driveway and get rusty....

Please figure out a way to get them into the garage..... if that means selling something, Whatever, just don't let a decent machine start rusting in the driveway.... Winter is upon us shortly!

Not every good deal needs to come home....

Messed around with the Unisaws today.

Took the top off the single phase one. Blew out all the sawdust. reinstalled the top.

Installed the blade from the 3 phase saw.

Popped the shop made wooden insert out and put the metal one in from the other saw.

Reinstalled the hand wheels with nails for keys.

Jury rigged a 220 feed.

Turned it on and WOW!.....what power! 3 belts turned by 3HP!

Now I'm sanding the top and an old rusty miter gauge I had.

Want to rig up a shorter Biesmeyer fence rail, than the one that came with it.
