New VCT floor plans

Hi,

I'm about to embark on an epic garage flooring mission, and need a bit of advice.

I've looked at a lot of options for the floor, a 50sqm new slab - and so far VCT has come out a clear winner in terms of price and function. I'd like porcelain but the final cost is a couple of thousand dollars more - as I don't think I can DIY install the tiles, but VCT seems quite a bit more idiot-proof.

However - as I'm from New Zealand, a lot of the materials available to me are different, so it's a bit tricky to compare to what you guys in the States have tried & proven.

I'm going to use Armstrong Excelon Black VCT tiles - the Aussie ones are more or less the same as American ones. However, for adhesive I have been recommended Armstrong PS-820 - is anyone able to comment on how this might compare to S-750?

I also have the following Polyurethane recommended as a coating to go over it (Dulux MaxiProof) - it seems reasonable, and I believe some people locally have used it over commercial vinyl without issue - any idea if this will bind to sanded VCT without epoxy? (Which is proving impossible to find something that's been tried before)

Welcome to the Garage Journal forum. There so much information here and wonderful knowledgeable people too.

I am not that familiar with VCT tile so I looked it up at the Armstrong website. I went to the Standard Excelon Imperial Texture 51910 Classic Black product site and found the PDF for installation of the tile. Reading the information provided it would seem this tile is used only for indoor installations (temperature controlled). After installation the room temperature can never be above 100 degree F (38c) or lower than 55 F (13c). That seems like a narrow temperature range for a garage. Does your garage environment in New Zealand fit this limited temperature requirement?

Job Conditions/Preparation:
• Resilient flooring should only be installed in temperature-controlled
environments. It is necessary to maintain a constant temperature before,
during, and after the installation. Therefore, the permanent or temporary
HVAC system must be in operation before the installation of resilient
flooring. Portable heaters are not recommended as they may not heat the
room and subfloor sufficiently. Kerosene heaters should never be used.

During the service life of the floor, the temperature should never rise above
100°F (38°C) nor fall below 55°F (13°C). The performance of the flooring
material and adhesives can be adversely affected outside this temperature
range.

Good choice, Armstrong tile is the squarest tile of them all. What are your temp ranges? As far as adhesive, we just use a good tile adhesive that we can get from our supplier. I don't know about coating it, it is vinyl tile that needs to be sealed and waxed to finish it.
