Bought a cool hoist on CL for $60!

1/3 HP and 1,200 capacity

This hoist is bad ***

Even came with the owners manual from 1974

Sealed, Oil bath lubricated motor with actual bearings

The 1/4" cable has seen better days, but that's a simple and easy fix

Total weight is only 40 pounds

Lifts 1,200 on a single line

Gear reduction is 533:1

I am going to replace the steel cable with something new......it currently have 1/4" cable but I want to see if 3/8" will fit into the drum hole

I want to change the motor lubricating oil..........some say SAE 20W and some say SAE 30W...which should I use?

The manual does not specify

Awesome find, curious why you want to put thicker cable on it though? The 1/4" will hold almost 4x as much as that will pull, do you just already have 3/8 on hand? Nice find regardless!!

Yeah I just figured 1/4" seems a tad small...........what is 1/4" steel cable rated for?

I don't have any replacement cable ordered yet............suggest I just stick with 1/4"?

The spool can hold quite a bit also, but I think I don't want the added weight or to bog anything down..........so I am thinking about going with 50 feet

It was a GREAT find, even better than it works flawlessly!

Even has a no slack drum with an electric brake built in

The long controller cable and long 110v plug is also great

I also want to make sure the hook it not permanently mounted on the cable

This way, I will be able to switch and install a hook, clevis, etc on the cable and not have to soley rely on a hook

I wouldn't worry too much about the oil. You could probably fill it with your wife's shampoo with no ill effects.

Those are often called a 'tugger', or 'power come-along'.

They are a riggers' tool, and usually found mounted firmly to a piece of heavy plate steel, which is brought out to an 'eye' or 'hook' at the centre-line of the drum.

Its not considered a safe hoisting tool, for obvious reason.

They work well for moving dead vehicles, or for moving machinery on rollers, sometimes with multiple ******-blocks to get a machine through a 'maze' of objects one desires not to have to move.

edited.......good oil for its gearbox is 'cheap at the price', if you mean to get any work done with the unit. The oil spec should be marked on the data-plate.

cheers

The 1/4" cable would be good for depending on the type 4-6Klbs, it will easily stand whatever that winch can pull.

I beg to differ

In the manual, they show pictures of it being used as a hoist and even show accessories to mount this to a trolley setup for using it as a hoist

Well 1/4" cable is definitely the largest diameter cable I can use, no big deal

Also, I found a section in the manual talking about the lubricating fluid

It says to change it every 250 hours, which is pretty substantial

Any which way, I still want to change it

Recommended fluid:

Mobilgear 632

It says if Mobilgear 632 cannot be found, use SAE90

Just specifies it has to be compatible with bronze gears

Fill line is 2-1/8" below the fill/drain plug

Too bad Mobilgear 600 XP 320 is only available in a 5 gallon bucket for $125

I will just have to settle for some high quality synthetic SAE90

Just make sure it says safe for yellow metals, or similar. Some gear oils aren't.

I have a cordless Yale Differential Chain Hoist and no one seems very interested; it works whether you have electric power or not. Anyone want to see pics? Cordless stuff is all the rage these days, you know.

Any tips on what I can use then?

All I have really been able to find, by the quart, is a Outboard Marine grade SAE 90

Outboard motor SAE90 oil should work, maybe?

I have been doing some cable research lately, lots of info and different kinds out there.

For example: 1/4" 7x19 (# of strands/construction) is rated for 2200lbs Working Load and 5000+ Breaking Load*

*these numbers can vary.

So would definitely NOT put on a thicker cable. I would look into the fiber cables, much more user friendly and the work loads are similar if not better. Off-roaders use similar setups for their trial rigs.

I bought a new steel cable, 70' X 1/4" winch cable with a thimble eye on one end

It is rated for 4,400 pounds

The winch drum has a slotted hole and the max size is 1/4"

The manual even says 1/4" is the thickest diameter

I really won't be lifting anything heavy or anything anywhere near even 1,000 pounds

More for lifting stuff and holding it in place, plus it will double as my deer skinning/deer hanging hoist

GL-4 lubricants appear to be bronze/yellow metal safe

Walmart has "SuperTech" which is supposed to be bronze safe gear oil
