New vise issue (or am I too picky)?

Just yesterday I took delivery of a brand new Wilton C-1, a vise that I saved up for to purchase. In fact I waited until I was able to buy one on sale.

When I opened and unpacked the C-1 I immediately noticed a line of casting slag and deep grinder marks on the top of it near the translating jaw, and grinder marks on the jaw itself. My guess is that someone used a grinder or coarse flap disc to grind off the worst part of the slag. It kind of bugged me when I first saw it, but I thought “oh well”... I finally have my new C-1.

This morning I took a better look at it in the sunlight, and I must admit that I have become more and more disappointed with it due to those deep, uneven grinder marks and that slag line from the casting. They are right on the top and very obvious. Quite frankly it looks horrible for a new vise (or any product really). I can be super-picky about some things and I’ll admit to not having expert skills using a grinder myself, but after saving up for this vise I am really not happy with the condition it showed up in. These appear to be manufacturing defects, not something caused by the vendor or during shipping.

It would be different for me if I had ordered a refurbished, open-box, or b-stock vise, but this one is brand new. I plan to keep this thing until I die, so starting out with a vise that actually appears new would be really great.

Am I being a dink? What would you do? Sorry for the crappy photo quality.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I've seen a number of New bullets and seen grinder touchups but not like that. I'd also return it. Almost looks as if the jaws were already on when the towers were dressed.

He already got the green light to return it. Supposedly they were shipping him a replacement but after that post he went MIA... Hope the new one is in better cosmetic condition.

I didn't go MIA, I was out of town working. I just got home late last night and today the replacement vise arrived via UPS. I also tracked the vise I returned to Enco and it too was delivered today. Perfect timing.

When I first saw the shipping box I became a bit worried:

No mystery what's (barely) in this box:

Even the other side was pretty badly torn up:

But once I got it out of the remaining packaging I was very pleasantly surprised, this vise is in perfect condition. This photo is the same corner as the previous one pictured above:

Pinscher added for scale:

Overall I am very happy with the replacement and also very pleased with the excellent customer service that I received from use-enco.com. I will not hesitate to order from them again.

Dang, I sell a lot of vises and if one of my packages arrived like that my customer would hang my *** out to dry. They need to work on that big time.

Great looking replacement though. Where's the Wilton decal that's supposed to be adhered in the front tower recess?

I have that badge on my desk, it wasn't installed at the factory, just sitting in the bottom of the box. Will put it on tomorrow.

Before you do that, make a high res scan of it in case someone needs to make a new one for a resto job.

Here's a scan of it. It's kind of banged up from being in that box. Best I could do.

Lu-Max: dang they sent that awesome Wilton C1 packed like that? wow i'm surprised that one didn't have the same issue as the first one. i wonder if the first one was dropped after i saw the pictures you originally posted because i really doubt Wilton would have let a vise in that condition leave the factory even if it was late on a Friday as they say when the shoddy work happens at some plants. congrats on the new Wilton C1 and it looks great.

Jake: i'm betting Wilton will send you a new sticker if you ask them or Balane probably has a very professional scan to if the one Lu-Max just took isn't pristine with the bend in it.

Jake: now you will because you said that. Wilton and Snap on and probably a few other companies tend to give out the little labels if you ask nice and own one of their tools.

now back to which Wilton vise you are going to own first. which one??

Manufacturing defects not limited to newer Wilton vises. I have an older 600s with a miscast dynamic jaw- drove my OCD side nuts for a while. The vise otherwise functions flawlessly and I am happy with it. If you look at the pics the jaw insert sits higher on one side than the other. Otherwise the jaws line up well.

Lu-Max,

What shipper was used?

What shipper did you use to return the defective one?

Glad you got it resolved....great looking replacement.
As others have said, the packing leaves a lot to be desired. No reason for that.

new definitions for the terms "drop ship" "air freight" "bulk delivery"

Glad to see the vise arrived in useable condition
