Hey guys I just joined this wonderful forum and everyone has been really helpful. I am considering a new welding table and I have a few options. I could wait and save money to buy a weld sale table or buy steel to build one. Buying a table off the Internet is not an option because from my experience with them they are very flimsy. I also want to get everyone's opinion on the best size of a welding table is my current one is 3×5 and 1/4 inch thick the next one will be at least a 1/2 inch but I'm open to thicker.

Thanks guy's

While buying one is a quick and easy thing to do, building one yourself is sort of a right of passage for every welder at some time or another builds their own welding table or cart.

I'd suggest buying one of the portable tilting types that go on sale in the $100-150 range. Sometimes even as low as $80. Work with that, learn what you like or dislike. Don't hesitate to modify it. Then build a more robust one with the features you wished was on the portable stand like clamp storage, hooks for the welder, cabling, easy grounding, etc.

Watch Craigslist and see what pops up there too. You might find a fixture table or other assembly that could be modified into a welding stand perfect for your needs.

I am a welder by trade, and have many opinions on welding tables/ tables in general. If you have the room, then you need to have multiple ones. I have a 30"x96" bench/table with 1/4" top. I have a 4'x8'x 1/2" top. I built both of those, and the steel is very expensive, even with my huge discount I had about 500 in my 4x8. I just recently bought a used 30"x72"x 1" thick table. All have different uses. For smaller projects and wrenching and light duty welding, I like my 30"x96" with 1/4" top. For general welding and frame work I like my 4x8 with 1/2" top. For heavy duty beat the snot out of it, I like the 1" top. For pipe spools and round projects I have welding positioners and jack stands. It all depends on what you do. So, even though most say thicker is better, its not always necessary. Get what you can afford and look for used, its way cheaper than new and you can always modify it to your needs.
