Hi! I am new to this forum, having joined mainly to seek out advice as I go through my dad's collection of tools, power tools, and machinery. He passed away last year. I am currently seeking information that would help me sell a Logan Screw Cutting & Turret Lathe model 820, which may not be in working condition. A friend of my dad's has told us that there was "something" wrong with it.
Does anyone have first hand advice for me, or another website I can go to, that would help me price this lathe?

I will have many more questions to come, as I go through a large barn with several machines that I DO NOT have any idea what they are. Hopefully I can post photos and someone can help me begin to gather information!

Thanks in advance!

Wow, nice lathe. Pictures for condition would help. "Something's wrong with it" could be major to minor. Without seeing the machine, I can say that I have seen these sell in the dayton Ohio area from about $400 to $1200 depending on condition.

Again, pics would help.

Clean it up really well and post it on Craigslist.
I am no expert on prices, but I feel that 800 would be a fair price that would sell within a reasonable amount of time.....at least in my part of the country. Lathes that size are pretty common around here, but usually they aren't on a stand.

A couple key points
-You have a quick change gear box. It's very desirable.
-Be sure to look around for extra chucks and a steady rest to sweeten the deal.
-don't forget to find that "Issue" I can't see it by the picture

I'm curious to see what everyone else has to say about this. 800 is too high for me, but there are a lot of guys out there ready to jump on a machine that they can put in their basement with little effort.

Good looking machine. I suggest that you check out the practical machinist forum. Probably wouldn't sell it there unless someone really wants it, they know too much to pay a big premium, but they are very free with their help. Most likely they'll talk you into keeping it. They will also help you identify and value any odd parts and tooling that you don't recognize, some of those little bits are more valuable than you'd expect.

Sorry for your loss, and good luck with the sorting,
Jim

I would put that in the $800-$1200 range depending on what you have to go with it. In your case you should find the chucks, steadies, tool holders, tailstock centers and chucks. Now you have a complete setup to offer that will sell at the high end and maybe more depending on the parts included. That is for just getting rid of the stuff. If you want to maximize dollars then you can do the research on prices and part it out.
