New Workbench Choices.

I got rid of my garage desk and kinda miss it.

I don't do anything really big or heavy in this garage and I've been getting by with a Workmate and my outfeed cart.
I decided I need a workbench to encourage me to spend more time out there.

I have about 96in. between the outfeed cart and the file cabinets but I'm frequently in the file cabinet.




I settled on 72 in. for the bench and started to shop.

So far I have three contenders.







I like the idea of putting it on wheels for ease of cleaning.

Anyone have experience with this type of bench?
I'm open to any ideas or other brands.
I'd like to keep it under $500.

Before I spent $400 on what is basically just a table, I would get a rollaway tool box with a thick wooden top. Locking wheels would let you move it around and you would get 10+ drawers to store tools and supplies.
The US General box gets great reviews from the tough crowd here on GJ. I have one myself.
But for a workbench, I built one from scratch using framing lumber and topped it with an IKEA butcher block counter top.

Here's what I'm working with.

Before I spent $400 on what is basically just a table, I would get a rollaway tool box with a thick wooden top. Locking wheels would let you move it around and you would get 10+ drawers to store tools and supplies.
The US General box gets great reviews from the tough crowd here on GJ. I have one myself.
But for a workbench, I built one from scratch using framing lumber and topped it with an IKEA butcher block counter top.

I thought about going that route.
Here's what I'm working with.

I'm planning for one more of the white cabinets.





I have enough space next to the white cart.
The green cabinets are tool and material storage.


The outfeed cart stores my compressor, grinder and miter saw.
The white cabinets are paint and chemicals.



I thought about making a bench out of two USG boxes and a top but I don't think I'll need anymore storage.
I more looking for a place to relax in the garage.

I've got the Seville, but with fixed legs. Works good for my needs, but wish it was 30" deep. I can pound on something on that table that I wouldn't dare do on the hard maple top on my Snap On box. Not going to do anything that requires a hammer bigger than about a 4 pounder on top of the box.

This, and depending on what you plan to do on the workbench you might consider buying a preformed Formica countertop at the big box home center.

I built mine from construction lumber. One nice thing about that besides saving money is that you can make it exactly the size that fits and makes best use of the space available. Custom width, depth and height. Even though I am only 5’9” tall, I found that I like a workbench that is 38 inches tall.

Whatever route you take for a workbench, make SURE you include a good sized well made vintage made in USA bench vise.

I have the Husky and like it. When I bought it you could not get wheels with it and if needed would have to do it yourself.

This. I have space limitations and could only manage 24" deep (same with my 72" box, which continues from one end of the bench). If I had the room, I would have absolutely wanted the extra depth of the work bench.

Those are all nice, functional, and provide ample room to store/roll stuff underneath, something you don’t get with another tool box you seem not to need, or a “cobbled together” 2 x 4 bench .

Many to choose from in this style, sizes and prices on Amazon.. I have a similar one (48X20) for the last 2 years, weighs about 50# , surprisingly sturdy (no wobble) and it's been great for light work. Mine came without power strip so I mounted a surge protector strip.

I'm pretty sure I want the adjustable height and wheels.

Whatever route you take for a workbench, make SURE you include a good sized well made vintage made in USA bench vise

Like you, I'm a fan of older vices vises.
In South Florida people think they're made out of gold.

I do get occasional wins.

you might consider buying a preformed Formica countertop

I have a Formica bench at the other house and while I like it, I think this garage needs something different.

That is downright cheap! I still think I need the 72 inches.

The ability to store stuff under the work surface is precisely the reason I built mine out of 2x4s, 2x6s, 2x12s and 4x4 posts. Under my 7 foot wide x 30 inches deep top, I built 4 drawers for tools and supplies, and cubby holes for 8 big plastic bins for corded power tools, extra wiring supplies, extra plumbing parts, etc. It is lag screwed into the framing of the back wall of my garage,

I did. I wanted to be able to sit at it maybe with a taller chair.

You can make it real simple like i did for a temporary bench that became a mainstay in my shop. I used my workmate as a set of legs, and just cut a ply wood top and screwed a 2x4 to the back and clamp the 2x in my workmate. I painted it but i use this little guy quite a bit, didnt have pics that did it justice but it handy af.

No experience but I like the Vevor because of the wheel options and adjustable height. Power bar is an added bonus as long as it's UL or equivalent listed.
