New Workshop - Rust-Oleum Epoxy Shield

I recently put up a 24x30 workshop at my place.. been a long time coming. After approx 30 days I proceeded to put down a Rust-Oleum epoxy shield garage floor kit. I couldn't be more happy. I would have had enough in the 2.5 garage floor kit to do the entire 720 square feet (concrete was smoothed out) however I had a good bit of my stuff on the one side of the shop. I ended up just picking up another kit.

Good news is the kit was $119.99 however it went down to $99.99. I contacted Amazon and they issued the $20 difference back to me and I purchased another kit. It hasn't arrived yet but wanted to share the results with everyone.

Had one pretty big crack and did my best to fill it.











Notice the far side of the floor is not finished in the above pic. I still have to finish organizing the shop once I get the total floor done in epoxy.

Looks good. What did you do to the concrete for prep? What did you used to grind out the crack and fill it? Was this the EpoxyShield Professional (solvent based) kit?

I must say that I like the EpoxyShield Professional base color/flake combinations that Rustoleum puts out.

I see this is your second post. I do hope you stick around this forum for a long time to come.

your floor looks great!

be forewarned, however--that stuff will fade like gangbusters if continually exposed to direct sunlight. it's not uv-protected.

i speak from experience, having used it at our old house. the concrete "lip" (an 8" or so strip between garage concrete pad and asphalt driveway) had continual sunlight about half the day (based on position of house on lot). i put the epoxy and clear on it. after a few months, it yellowed and faded like crazy. ended up painting that "lip" with black concrete paint and used a tsunamiseal edge to clean things up and make it look good.

other than that, it looks and works great, and is reasonably priced. super easy to apply--it is miles & miles easier than the professional grade, multi-step 100% solids stuff that i put on a later house.

Thanks CT2012 for the info about the sunlight. I honestly didn't know that but I did read it shouldn't be used in locations that routinely have access to sunlight so makes sense. DoItMySelf.. no doubt I will stick around and thanks. I love posting up projects etc. I'm a Lincoln Continental fan so I have an 18 page thread on the Lincoln Forums and I'm into building cars / hot rods etc. so I"ll keep up the posts. Honestly it was a new slab. About 32-35 after it was poured I followed this YouTube video:

Basically I continued to clean it to make sure it was 100% clean. I didn't really do much on it before I did the epoxy so it was mostly a bit of dry dirt from my shoes and normal debris. After using a water hose and scrub brush about 3 times I then did the acid etch in the kit. I made certain there wasn't anything on the concrete before I did the epoxy.

The one main crack from the concrete saw blade was by the front of the slab. I used the Rust Oleum filler kit from Home Depot. It was like $22. I did also use it on the big crack along the middle however I could have done a much better job filling the crack. I still have the last third of the slab to do, which I'm going to do possibly tomorrow. I picked up another kit. I may try to fill the crack in on that slab a bit better to see if I can actually make it look better than the other 2/3rds of the slab.

I eventually want to do some RaceDeck in a corner of the shop where my custom truck will sit. I saw the guy at SEMA 2016 but didn't stop to say hello. But I've always wanted to have it nice and sealed up first.

Here are some more updates. Before I had the shop installed (only took me 10 years of waiting / planning /etc) I only had a small storage area that is attached to the my home. This is what I referred to as my "shed" and I kept my cools, parts for my projects, etc. No idea how I did it but after all the years I pulled everything out and began cleaning the floor today. I watched this YouTube video tonight:

I ran up to Home Depot and picked up some TSP for under $4. I plan to use it tomorrow to get the oil stains out. One of the oil stains, the bigger one, isn't too old. I had some oil spill on me not too long ago and didn't do a good job cleaning it up... ugh.

Anyways, I had this place packed to the top before.. so its nice to see it cleaned out. I plan to paint the walls, epoxy the floor, put some more shelves up etc. This will be for my decorations among other stuff.











I actually didn't take another other pics after I scrubbed it a couple more times before going to Home Depot. I'll take more pics tomorrow and post them. I'll get it as clean as I can before I move forward.

I worked on the floor today and it is looking better. I'll post pics this weekend. I scrubbed it 4 times total. My pressure washer needs to be taken apart so not sure when I'll finish it up to the point I feel I do can do the epoxy on it. I did get the last 3rd of the workshop stuff moved around so its clear. I'll rinse it a couple of times before I do the etching.

So as promised I put some work in on the shop and old shed / storage area this weekend. I got the floor in my storage area as clean as I could and finally did the etching and epoxy. Very happy with the results. I'll let it dry a few days before I attempt to put anything back in the area. As mentioned before I'll also be painting the walls etc. in this area. I didn't get pics of the workshop floor but I got the final 3rd of the floor finished. It got a bit dark for a decent picture. I'll get pics tomorrow.

As mentioned prior, I picked this up from Home Depot and used it to try and get the floor as clean as I could. I had some oil stains that were a bear.

This was the final pic before I turned in for the night. I realize this area may not come out perfect but I was totally ok with that. Basically I had to purchase that other epoxy kit and didn't want to waste the leftovers I knew I would have. I only had the 3rd of the floor left in my new metal building. I figured I'd get this cleaned up as much as possible and take a shot at coating it.



I'll post more pics of the workshop and maybe start another thread to show what I start working on next within the shop.

Today I woke up to a pretty much dry epoxy coating. I didn't have time to really do much at the house so after running some errands and returning home the floor was totally dry at the 24-hour mark. It calls for 24-48 hours to dry however with it being 85 in FL the past couple of days it was 100% dry. Even my old storage area was dry. Although the storage area didn't come out perfect it looks WAY better and considering I scrubbed the hell out of it and it was still a bit nasty with oil... like others have said the key is this product supposedly doesn't hold up well to areas that a lot of direct sunlight. I do plan to have my garage doors cracked in my shop, especially on super nice days like today... so I'll make sure to update everyone. They also sell other products including a sand that gives it a nice texture... key for if the floor ever gets wet since it becomes slippery.. also, I believe they have a clear coat that may seal it up a bit more.. although I didn't plan to use it. The majority of the time these doors will be closed as much as a normal home with a garage.. so we shall see.

The workshop last 3rd of the floor finally finished. My Father did a great job on throwing out the flakes as I painted small sections at a time:





I went out on a limb and only mixed 1 gal of the epoxy with the activator. Originally I mixed both activators with the 2 gallons when I did the first 2/3 of the shop.. this time I knew I would be totally wasting a TON of product if I mixed both up. So at this point I have a full gallon of epoxy and 1 qt of activator. I may just donate it to my Father for helping me so he an coat some concrete at his place. He has a couple of slabs that are not exposed to direct sunlight but one has a carport over it. If we decide to do that I'll take pics and post them as well.

But your floors look great! With the storage room you just did, how about some fresh paint on the walls? That would give a sort of finishing touch, don't you think? But then we'll need at least 2 or 3 more pictures, maybe more.

Yes, paint was definitely needed. I painted it yesterday and today and will post pics tomorrow. Looks so much better.

I didn't have enough paint to do the entire area so I used what I had and did this wall a tad darker. I do still need to apply a second coat to this wall and of course the back near the shelves. You get the idea though.

Well, I've been thinking I need to get back in this forum, as promised and provide updates since it has been a few years. I

FEVERinc, the small "shed" as I call it has not held up well. I think the massive stains and whatever those chemical were just were too much for the coating. The 24x30 shop has held up fantastic. It was brand new concrete though and I waited 30+ days before I coated it. When i get back from vac I'll post pics as I recently organized the shed (where the floor isn't looking too good). I don't leave the doors open for too long in the garage but I can see where direct sunlight just doesn't hold up. My late father - he passed Oct 2017 - used the leftover I had for this back carport area. It has direct sunlight and had faded BAD! I'll post a pic of it as well. He just did it since we had it as left over to see how it would hold up.

What are folks using these days to coat their garage floors?

Sorry to hear about your dad. If you re-do the failed coating I would suggest using an oil-block primer fir the first coat after grinding
