Hello all. First time poster. I've been a member of the forum and have learned a lot from everyone, but have not had a chance to post anything yet (too busy working in the garage, and not on it). So here we go:

From a post here regarding building garage cabinets, I learned about Norm Abram and the New Yankee Workshop series. Has anyone used his plans? I am looking at his garage workshop. I am planning my 2 car garage and like the idea of having cabinets with a portable workspace that can be wheeled to the side at the end of the night. Thanks!

His stuff is very buildable, if you have the tools, and of course he ha built them all on video.

If you are near a Barnes ans Noble, or any good newstand, see if you can pick up a Great Garage Makovers magazine over in the woodworking section. Some nice rolling cabinets featured in there.

I bought plans and made one of his woodworking benches years ago, as one of my first projects. I just used 2x4's instead of hardwoods, but the plans were nice and it came out ok. I used it a lot but, it's been in storage since the divorce, but that's another story.
Love the show, he just happens to have that dedicated mortiser, or whatever power tool he needs lol.
Love his wood shop too... was gonna build one like but .. see above...

My $10 well spent - I bought a set of plans for the 10" table saw-table. The plans were easy to follow and it came out just as it should. Handles a full sheet of plywood - not something you can do easily on other small table saws. I liked the wheels on the end so you could tip the saw uproll it into a corner - and it had a small footprint when not in use. It rolls easily on the concrete & tips easily into the back of the truck if I need it off-site.

Yes, I think that the plans are well done. Too bad that the New Yankee Workshop has been cancelled. I just read in the Wood magazine they will nolonger be making anymore episodes. Norm is the first tv celeb my children knew by name.

Thanks for the updates! I'll get the plans for the garage workshop. My only concern now is that I need to learn the joints that he uses (I don't have a table saw, but my router will suffice).

I'm going to build his garage workshop, but will have both benches on locking casters or raised a few inches off the ground (just in case I get water in my garage).

I purchased a set of plans from The New Yankee Workshop for the wagon that was built on the one episode quite a few years ago. A wagon similar to the commercially available Little Red Wagon type.
The plans were very good. Precise, detailed, material list, and well drawn.
However, I modified mine from the print. Norm used solid type wheels. I used pnuematic tires like on a handtruck.
If you like what you see Norm do and want to try it for yourself - Get the plans, they are worth the price of admission.

His plans should be good, but will they fit your space and needs? I've found that in most situations where I need built in projects, it is best to draw up your own plans to customize what you are building for a perfect fit and for your needs.
A sheet of paper and a pencil are all you need.

True. I will need to adjust the length a bit. However, I have never built cabinets, and I would like the diagrams on how to build them. I haven't been able to find free plans online that are detailed enough. Thanks.

Never used any of his plans. The ship on NYW does not belong to Norm. It is on the property of Russ Morash, the creator of NYW. A lot of the projects Norm built are also used on Morash's property.

I can barely drive a nail, and I would watch Norm and his New Yankee Workshop. Mainly for the strange accent, but also for the way he made woodworking look easy.

I imagine that PBS will replace it with some century old British comedy series.
