Hey guys, found this site on a whim today when looking at pictures of workbenches. Just bought my first house the end of 2013 with my soon to be fiance. We gutted pretty much the whole house and finally moved in around august last year. Still some work to be done on the inside of the house, but looking forward to the garage and basement work area this summer. Garage is a 12x20 which we pulled down since it was originally built directly on slab and everything was rotted. You can see it with a drunken lean just past the house. And then the new one we built in place. We have wired the whole inside for lights, opener and outlets...Will be starting a build thread for the basement and garage once work gets started, but glad to see everyone's garages and gather ideas.

Chapman: nice looking home and garage. might i suggest you put your location in your profile so it shows up when you post on other threads. i used a 3 state area because i travel quite a bit, but you can use city and state or area if you wish. also when you do start a build thread it would get you more replies and viewers if you put the link to it in your signature which is also in your profile.

did you have any issues building a brand new garage that close to the property line because in some areas near me if the owner tears one down then applies for a building permit the new set backs apply?

congrats on finding this place and a ton of information here you know where to look. just ask questions if you need any help and we'll try to find you the answers.

cheers

Welcome to the Journal. Where in CT are you from? I'm in Newington myself. Congrats on the new house and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on the garage/basement.

Thanks guys, I will update profile and signature once things get started. Looking to start the first phase of the basement bench within the next couple of weeks. In regards to the property line, we waiting to pull down the old garage until the town passed a bill that any building on the property could be rebuilt in the same spot it was. Thankfully they passed that may of last year.

As for location, i'm down in Milford.

Chapman: good timing on the garage rebuild. i always thought it was a terrible rule to have to leave a part of a POS falling down garage to be able to put up a new structure in the same space.

might i suggest you look at Denwood's thread on how he transformed his single car garage. here's the link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263351

there might be some ideas in Denwood's thread that might help you or just enjoy his pictures and watching his progress he made in a short amount of time.

Wish I had the budget and extra 4 feet of width to do all that. We will be leveling out the top of the pad a little bit, putting up some plywood on the walls and then maybe sheet rock. I have a craftsman tool chest with mid and upper that will be going on the back wall. My fiance is a project manager for a commercial construction company, so there is a 5 or 6 foot cabinet that was made wrong for a restaurant which we got to keep. Costco also has a nice cabinet / small bench system for under $1000 that we are going to put in. I don't think we will be keeping the cars in it and may rent it out to her brother so he can take his business of refinishing spent casings out of his parent's garage. I'm more excited about starting on the basement bench in the next couple weeks. But thanks and I will definitely take an in-depth look at his garage and all the others I find on here.

If you are interested I met a guy the other day that had some really nice s/s cabinets, they were about 36" tall, 16" deep and one was 3 feet long and the other 6, I had no use for them, they were out of a hospital, he only wanted $200 for the pair of them, nice shelves inside and nice handles that operated a nice locking mech... Very well made... He was in s windham, pm me if you want his info, maybe he can send you a picture if its something you are interested in..

Chapman: i just noticed you have a link showing off your golf shop and it didn't work for me. i'm curious what you have because I've been in a few golf repair shops in the last 40 years. is that what the basement shop will be for?

cheers

The link works for me and I see you posted in it. Its not really going to be a repair shop. More so just a place for me to re-grip my clubs and those of my friends and family. I do want to start tinkering with some club building in the future.

Chapman: i did see your new thread in the garage gallery and made a post. i must have had a long hard day and i was trying to click on the title of your thread in your link instead of the link. i was going to and still might turn my attached shed/storage that is about 8 x 13 into a little workshop for my golf stuff so interested to see what you do with yours.

sounds like you know how the forum works and you are headed down the slippery slope of obtaining a ton of new knowledge and learning how to use more tools. ask questions if you need help and we'll try to help if we see the post and can or enjoy and i hope you learn half as much as i have the last few years I've been reading information here.

cheers
