Newb Pebble Question

As I have been biten by the pebble bug, Iv'e noticed that several tools are painted in the pebble part of the tool. Red or black. Now, my question is, did Plomb paint these tools and sell them that way when they were new?

Okay - no body knows? Then I'll throw this out. I think Plomb tools DID paint the pebble part as their new tools, mostly in red. Prove me wrong.

I used paint on all my tools years ago, but I've also seen it on

tools but where I've really seen it a lot was on older Williams tools. Maybe it seems like they came that way because the color always seems to look the same. I wonder if that was owner done or they came that way. I'm thinking owner because I have an old Williams set that appears very, very original and there's no paint.

Guys - this question is asked only because I'm looking at Plomb pebble wrenches that were manufactured before most of us were born. I'm simply looking for those that might have knowledge of these old great old tools. Nothing in it for me. I just like old tools, exspesially Proto.

AFAIK, Plomb did NOT paint their tools. All were simple chrome, plain steel or cadmium. Though, I will admit I have never seen a cad plated pebble. Never seen a picture of a painted one. Never heard of a painted one until now. I would love to see some hi res pictures of it close up though. (hint, hint)

Bonney also painted some tools. The style I know of were the military issue Stream Line's. Either gloss black or very, VERY dark blue.

I recall seeing a pebble on eBay a while ago, it was a ratchet and a previous owner had painted the pebble section bright yellow. Only one i recall seeing with any paint.

Thanks Impala - the only reason I brought this up at all was that I see several pebble tools with the same red paint on the pebbly part. I just want to know if this was something that the company did back in the day?

The only colors I'd be looking that might be original is red or black The plombs i got off ebay come all across the country and not here in hawaii. The same red color is on some of them. Hence, my question.

i would bet someone painted them cruiser. i have seen may contractors paint thier tools for various reasons. tool accountability. i have red you have yellow. ease of finding . theft prevention just to name a few. i would guess the pebbles hold the paint the best in the rough area.

I have seen and own several painted Plombs in red and yellow. Alot of tools used in industrial areas, as in the mines out here in SE New Mexico are still being painted yellow by the end users. I have seen a lot of tools that where used in the military painted by the guys who had them.

I don't think Plomb ever painted their tools. That being said during or after WWII some of the Proto industrial tools came with a yellow and a blue coating on them. There have been a few lots on ebay and I think some one here had some for sell.

I have collected about 12-15 plomb tools and wrenches around the Los Angeles area , none have any paint.

None of the pebble examples of wrenches/ratchets/breaker bars in the collection have paint I would consider factory original.

At least one version of the Plomb adjustable wrenches are painted black in the inset portions, I believe it to be factory.

The Plomb pipe wrenches in the collection are painted red on the handles, also believe it to be factory applied.
