Newbie asking for wiring help

I am new to this forum and would appreciate advice as I am an electrical ignoramus.
I bought a 350w (220V) bench grinder with a broken switch at a garage sale. I replaced the four-pole switch (brown, blue, green from power cord. Two black wires from motor and two red wires through a capacitor.)
I tried several capacitors, but the motor just hums and I need to spin the grinding wheel to get the grinder running.
Please help.

You may have a malfunctioning centrifugal switch. You can try cleaning it.

50 years ago I worked on a Bandsaw that had dust in the switch.

Also, you don't mention where you're from, but Blue/Brown/Green are the wire colors here in the EU... Brown is load, Blue is Neutral, Green is ground. Voltage is -nominal- 230 volts but everything here is 50 HZ... that can cause issues if trying to run it in North American where everything is 60 Hz...

Clean the switch, and replace the cap with what you took out. May have to order it online. Also, it sounds like you are not engaging your starter windings in the motor (which is what the C'Switch is for) - so there is that.

From South Africa. 220/230V. 50Hz. Brown/red = live, blue/black = neutral. Green&yellow = earth.
Will try recommendations.

Is it being powered by 120 or 240?

If 120, it never will work well. It needs 240.

At 60HZ, it'll turn faster, it's very likely something like 2850 RPM at 50HZ, it'll be more like 3450 at 60HZ. This shouldn't be a problem because at 60HZ it will never exceed 3600 RPM and just about every wheel is rated at least 3600.

I think the other recommendations are correct that I either need to clean or replace the c switch.
