I have been lurking on this site for awhile now and thought it was finally time to post. A job change is taking me from Overland Park, KS to Atlanta. We have made the decision to build a new house here and along the way I get to design/build a new garage.
We have already purchased a 2.5 acre piece of heavily wooded property in a small neighborhood near Canton, GA. The commute to the north Atlanta suburbs will be rough (about 40 minutes each way) but the site is exactly what we wanted - no neighbors right next door and plenty of privacy. My bride of 25 years is all signed on for the garage so it's just a matter of getting things moving.
The good news is that there is no HOA to screw around with (the builder tells me with a smile that HE is the HOA) The bad news - if there really is any - is that my home builder will have to build the garage so I will be limited on some decisions (i.e. pole building v. conventional framing) There are some limits on size, and budget, so I am currently planning about 32W x 36D.
I am currently planning on a 9' overhead door to the right of the building and a 10'x10 to the left. I am considering putting a matching door directly across the building from the 10' one. There are two reasons: 1. I like the idea of being able to drive through the building to load and unload a trailer and, 2. it would make it a lot simpler to expand the building in the future if it is ever possible.
I will have a 2 post lift and all the equipment needed to do car restorations for myself in the space. Which brings me to my first (of many, no doubt) problem. I am really struggling to figure out where everything should go to make the space as efficient as possible. It all kind of centers around the lift but every tine I think I have a solution I begin to question the layout. I would really appreciate any thoughts any of you might have about the best layout in this kind of space.
Thanks for any ideas you might have. I promise I will post pics and keep all updated on the progress once we get started. The house should be started in the next 3 weeks or so - the garage sometime after that.
